Ascension Island, a remote and unique location in the South Atlantic, is facing a pressing housing crisis. The combination of an aging property inventory, limited development over the years, and the island's vital role as a hub for strategic operations has created significant pressure on its housing stock. PLP Labs Lead Savannah Willits and tim hall of LIGHT EARTH DESIGNS LLP visited the island on a collaborative reconnaissance mission, now featured in SDC - Sustainable Design Collective's latest magazine. They found that the island’s housing needs are particularly complex due to its geographic isolation. Transporting building materials over vast distances is costly and time-consuming, making it essential to prioritize designs that minimize material requirements. Modular and prefabricated construction techniques could be game-changers, as they reduce waste, require fewer resources, and can be efficiently shipped and assembled on-site. Additionally, Ascension’s environment presents unique challenges. Housing solutions must be durable enough to withstand the island’s harsh weather conditions while being sustainable to preserve its delicate ecosystems. Utilizing locally available or recycled materials where possible could further reduce dependency on long-distance imports and lower environmental impact. As concerns over climate change and environmental sustainability continue to grow, the construction industry is shifting towards sustainable and green-focused buildings. From 2023, there has been a significant increase in the use of energy-efficient materials and a focus on renewable energy sources. Examples of sustainable building practices include: - Using recycled materials in construction, such as reclaimed wood and low-carbon concrete - Incorporating energy-efficient systems, like solar panels and green roofs - Implementing water conservation measures, such as rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse - Designing buildings with natural ventilation and daylighting to reduce the need for artificial lighting and heating/cooling The Bullitt Center in Seattle, USA, is considered one of the greenest commercial buildings in the world, producing more energy than it consumes through its solar panels and geothermal system. The picture is given below. Similarly, the Edge building in Amsterdam, Netherlands, boasts a 98% reduction in carbon emissions through its innovative design and energy-efficient systems. As we mark #EarthDay2024, Service Design Team Lead Francis Rowland reflects on the role of service design in helping to create a better future for the planet 🌍 "In the service design team, we have been thinking about how we need to adapt our work in the face of these [climate] challenges, but at a scale we can tackle. Because of the versatility of service design practice, we feel we have an opportunity to fit in and provide value in new and different ways...We've been looking at the methods we use, the clients we work with or would like to work with, what academics have to say about the role of design in a more sustainable future and different lenses through which to view our work." https://lnkd.in/es7DU3BR #ServiceDesign #Sustainability #PlanetCentredDesign
