Happy #FindsFriday! Today we’ve got something really #special for you – a #medieval segmented, or divided, dish recovered from #WestYorkshire, shown here from three different angles. Our dish is coated in a green glaze on the inside and outside, and the glaze on the underside has flaked off. This flaking may be due to localised heating, although we couldn’t entirely confirm this from the surviving sherds. It has been dated from the 13th to the 15th centuries. The function of these ‘segmented dishes’ is not well-known, as they aren’t very common in the archaeological record. It’s thought that they were used as ‘condiment dishes’ on the dining table. The fact that ours has been heated on the underside, however, suggests that it may have had a non-standard function. So why, exactly, is that exciting for us? We think this object has a particularly personal air to it – we can identify it, we can guess what it was originally made for, but we don’t know what the person who actually owned it used it for. Maybe they liked to eat something hot, instead of cold? Or maybe they found this dish and reused it for something else, like melting wax? Or was it something entirely different?
