The New York Times recently published an article titled "The ‘Mad Men’ Era Is Long Over. Why Is Advertising Still So White?" I've worked in US advertising and found a racial percentage largely consistent with the racial percentage of America. African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and Asian-Americans were represented roughly in proportion to their percentage of the general population. This was about a decade ago, even before there was a serious effort to diversify. There was also a disproportionate expat population, mostly from South America and Asia. I think advertising is the least of the problem when it comes to industries with a lack of diversity. I think there are other industries (e.g. STEM) where the lack of diversity is far more of an issue.
Before we keyboard-support Diversity in Advertising, we should ask ourselves if minorities in the US really care to be in Advertising. I'm not sure many do (Bell Curve). Take African Americans who are weaned on individualistic mantras like 'Gotta get paid/I'm gonna get mine'. They view sports, rap/music, entertainment (acting/comedy) and notoriety as their ticket to fame and fortune. Why would they give up their conspicuous American Dream for a behind-the-scenes job in Advertising which is fairly conformist with its structure, hierarchy, pay scale etc? Just saying...
I just can’t get over the loss of money because you aren’t engaging diverse demos. And I mean everything from DINKs to disability and ethnicity. The planet is diverse, act like it. Nothing grows well as a monoculture.
