#Startups from California to China are heading to the front of the #spacetech race as they seek to mine asteroids and build cheap and cheerful rockets. 🚀   Incumbent giants like #NASA have been turning to small startups, toddlers by comparison, to advance in a sector they used to dominate. In 2023, $4.6B was invested in space startups and the number of deals went up - bucking a global downward trend. So why have space startups become so competitive? 💰#Spacetech development is expensive and govt agencies are willing to outsource those costs. (NASA’s 2024 budget was just approved for $2.3B – 8.5% less than requested.) 🧪BUT testing out products in space is cheaper than ever before: Private industry (i.e. SpaceX) has blown open the doors to #rideshare missions. Today, you can piggyback on larger flights to send material into space for $100K or less, well within the budgets of VC-backed startups. 💣#Space could well be the next theater of global warfare, with threats of Russian nukes in space being just one example. Urgency will catalyze rapid innovation. 🥇Because of its (sky)-high threshold for success, space is one of the few sectors where being a first mover is still an enormous advantage. 📡Dual applications here on earth can make founders huge profits while they wait for bigger contracts. The graph below does not show VC investment in AI startups. It shows Global Land-Ocean Temperature changes. It shows that last month was the hottest February on record globally, with "exceptionally high" temperatures in the air and sea.  I deeply support climate warriors and climate-tech startups (I hope they get huge investments like AI startups). NATO’s Investment in European Defense Tech NATO announced it will invest in four European tech companies as part of a €1 billion fund launched in 2022. The initiative aims to enhance defense technology following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. German company ARX Robotics and three UK startups, including Fractile, iComat, and Space Forge, are the initial beneficiaries.
