🧠 The US needs to reframe its attitude towards immigration if it wants to avoid a self-inflicted brain drain. ❌ Our policy and rhetoric seeks to drive away immigrants, even though they’re disproportionately responsible for US innovation and AI development. 🎓 We’re losing foreign graduates and young talent to countries with more welcoming immigration policies. ➗ At the same time, our internal education standards have been falling. 💡 That’s bad news for US innovation, foreign investment, and its future standing in the global race in AI, semiconductors and more. This is why the US’s skill level, innovation and economic prosperity over the next 20 years are so closely intertwined with immigration. ⬇️

As the Australian #government tightens its #immigration rules, particularly concerning #internationalstudents, a wave of concern is sweeping through the student #community. These measures, while aimed at ensuring only genuine students benefit from Australia's #education system, also bring a wave of anxiety and uncertainty. As the Founder & CEO of University Living, a global #studenthousing managed marketplace, I interact with numerous students and stakeholders in the education sector. I believe that while it's crucial to regulate policies to maintain the integrity and quality of the education system, it's equally important to consider the long-term implications of such changes. Regular shifts in policies can create an unwelcoming environment, making it difficult for genuine students to plan their education journey. The current housing crisis and job market saturation in Australia only add to the complexity. It's a delicate balance to strike - between welcoming genuine students and maintaining robust standards. Governments must take into account projections for the next 5-10 years while regulating policies, providing all stakeholders with the information needed to plan and adapt. My conversation with The Indian Express was an opportunity to highlight these issues, and I appreciate the platform for facilitating such discussions. It's through such dialogues that we can hope to find a middle ground that respects the aspirations of international students while upholding the quality and reputation of Australia's education system. Navigating immigration status is a significant challenge for international students in the USA. Post-graduation, the pressure to maintain legal status can be daunting, fueled by the uncertainties of job retention or job hunting. This concern persists until one secures permanent residency. Such stress can significantly impact one's ability to concentrate on professional responsibilities. Additionally, the emotional strain of being distant from family and lacking a local support network further exacerbates these challenges. Despite these challenges, the resilience shown by international students is commendable. Educational institutions, employers, and policymakers must recognize these unique pressures and work towards creating a more supportive environment. Together, we can foster a community that not only recognizes the contributions of international students but also actively supports their journey toward achieving their professional and personal aspirations in the U.S. Let's continue to advocate for policies that ease these burdens and celebrate the rich diversity and perspective that international students bring to our campuses and workplaces.

A recent survey by Ascent One shows that 41% of international students from China, India, the Philippines, and Colombia are unaware of recent changes to Australia’s migration policies that have resulted in record-high visa rejections. It was shocking to read that just 23% of current international students secure jobs related to their fields of study as they face mounting challenges in terms of limited work rights and hurdles in attaining permanent residency. The stricter policies have also resulted in 27% of prospective students reconsidering their decision to study in Australia, and about 14% of current students uncertain about continuing their education here. #internationalstudents #studentvisas #migration

NEW REPORT ON INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS 🧑🏾🎓 👩🏿🎓 👨🏽🎓 International students are commodified and treated as an income stream. Their wellbeing and financial security are secondary to universities’ priority of collecting tuition fees, while harsh immigration policies mean that many struggle to meet stringent financial obligations, and are often unable to bring family with them. International students also experience lack of financial and wellbeing support from universities, heavy surveillance, restrictive immigration checks and threats of being reported to the Home Office. Another significant issue is problematic agents and recruitment practices, where students have been asked to pay additional fees or have been subjected to scams. Our new report also found that international students reported differential treatment, discrimination, and negative effects on their mental health as a result of anti-immigration sentiment, isolation, visa worries and financial struggles. Many were scared to get involved in political activism out of fear of this causing repercussions for their status.
