Hello March, a new month is upon us! 🌿 While construction pauses during the current rainy season, we're grateful for the rain nurturing our plant life. This time of year symbolizes preparation and promise. The hydroseed spread last year has thrived with the help of the rain, as evidenced by the photos captured in the field this week. Each drop serves as a poignant reminder of the intricate dance between nature and human development. Here's to growth and renewal!

Digging deep foundations of core, sustainable habits dictate our success. Similar to a skyscraper, if we dig shallow foundations on poor soil, our foundation cracks and our structure blows over at the first sign of wind. But if we dig deep foundations on solid ground, we can weather intense storms for decades to come. What is your foundation built on?

Managed to visit Branston beck today to check in on the stage zero landscape that Rob Mungovan from wild trout trust and Paige Donnelly from east Mercia rivers trust had spotted in last post. It’s a great example of the importance of biology in groundwater fed streams driving channel change, anastomosis and eventual stage zero. Branch has come down the channel and this leads to channel widening. Behind this a mid channel bar of sand forms, then in turn colonised by iris. This continues to pinch the channel and eventually it avulses and forms another channel leaving the fence line as an island. Keep adding the wood to encourage further anastomosing channel development and before long the wetted perimeter covers the valley bottom. Also obvious was the changes post storm events and the impacts on sediment supply. Long sections of the bed has accreted with large volumes of sand rippled bed and can see a transition to a sand bed system where the gradient drops. The norfolk reeds then stabilise these mobile bed features and in these low gradient sections we start to see a return to a sand bed stage zero landscape. In between these reaches where the gradient increases we see the gravel bed return. Before long if we add a wood and allow natural processes to take place then we get to glimpse a landscape that was lost just a few hundred years ago. Not bad for a low gradient / low energy dredged stream and highlights the importance of biology as well as flow in encouraging river to self restore. The other name for this stream is the Sand beck as it runs over the relics of the vast heath that once covered arable land upstream. Nice to see plenty of trout redds on the gravelly sections which highlights how adaptable life can be in these rivers too. This was a great low cost project delivered through partnership approach by east Mercia rivers trust putting the building blocks back in to allow change. Bed was raised with limestone gravel, wood added, and secondary channels and wetlands installed which looked amazing too.

Happy First Day of Spring! As we welcome the warmer weather and all the green growing things coming back to life, we also have increased rains and stormwater runoff. There are things you can do to help manage your stormwater. ☔ Put in a rain garden or rain barrel ☔ Never put your lawn clippings or leaves in the streets and gutters ☔ Plant native plants and trees to help with infiltration (absorption) and increase evaporation and transpiration ☔ Reduce impervious areas so rain soaks into the ground, use permeable paving systems where you need paving. Be aware of the natural drainage on and around your property to maximize your impact and ensure you don’t negatively impact your neighbors downstream.

🌊 In honor of National River Month and World Environment Day, we're thrilled to spotlight Pennichuck's Merrimack River Intake Project! 🌍As part of our commitment to resilience, we installed a 48” diameter Steel Pipe, stretching a remarkable 215 feet into the river's depths, and a 20 foot long, 48” diameter stainless steel screened intake system. 🔧The intake screen is maintained utilizing a 1500-gallon airburst system. 💧 Amidst the ebb and flow of construction, our existing intake station continued to be operational, providing uninterrupted service to our community. 🌟Through dedication and innovation, this project wasn't just about pipes and screens—it was about securing a year-round second source of raw water, allowing us to withdraw up to our permitted allowance of 30 MGD. 🌊 Our team overcame challenges of fluctuating river flows and unpredictable conditions due to the significant rainfall events that occurred. 🌍In the end, the Merrimack River Intake Project isn't just a feat of engineering—it's a testament to our commitment to resiliency, and a promise to safeguard our water resources for generations to come. 🌱 Together, let's celebrate National River Month and World Environment Day, as we continue to chart a course towards a brighter, more sustainable future. #MerrimackRiverProject #SustainableFuture #CommunityStewardship #NationalRiverMonth #WorldEnvironmentDay #Pennichuck #PennichuckWater
