After completing eight weeks of student teaching, including wrapping up my unit yesterday and submitting grades today, I felt compelled to email my students and their families. It's been a journey with its share of ups and downs, but it's also brought to light some overwhelming obstacles. Lately, it seems like public schools are veering towards becoming mere daycare centres, where teachers are pressured to hand out passing grades and act as babysitters, all while contending with threats from various sources. It's disheartening to see education lose sight of its true purpose – fostering accountability and genuine learning. I emphasised to my students the importance of holding themselves accountable, reflecting on their actions, and having open dialogues with their families. To the families and guardians, I urged them to support their students by monitoring their progress and assignments, reminding them that education is not just a right but a privilege to be cherished and maximised. In closing, I couldn't ignore the pressing issue of teacher shortages. Please take a moment to review the linked article, which sheds light on the stark statistics. As one of only 5-6 students graduating with a degree in science education this May from SUNY Oswego, and the sole student graduating with a concentration in Earth Science, I'm acutely aware of the challenges many universities across the US are facing in this regard. Undoubtedly, some parents will respond strongly to my email. It's a reality I've come to expect, having witnessed how a single email from a parent can jeopardise a teacher's job, even when they're simply fulfilling their responsibilities. I long for the day when this struggle will be behind me. I sincerely hope to never again find myself in a classroom where support is lacking and teachers are unfairly depicted as having cushy jobs with summers off. Welcome to the reality of public education – a realm where trust, belief, and support are often in short supply.
