I'm often asked how I, as a corporate leader, maintain a clear mind and steadfast determination. My secret? Consistent physical training. At least twice a week, I'm in the gym, weight training, feeling my muscles strengthen and keeping in shape. On weekends, I opt for the outdoors, kayaking through tranquil waters, cycling around the island, or hiking up mountains to breathe in the fresh air. Physical training has instilled in me the tenacity and adaptability required for managing a team—it teaches me to remain calm and efficient under pressure. I believe that leadership, much like muscle, grows stronger with proper exercise. I now weave these experiences into my coaching practice, aiding others in uncovering their strength and leadership potential. The rush of endorphins isn't just a burst of personal joy; it also primes my muscles and mind for the day ahead, reinforcing my resolve to meet any challenges that arise. How do you look after your own wellbeing as a leader? I exercise (running and indoor cycling) and try to ensure I get 8 hours sleep. A lot of the things I do to ensure my wellbeing are based around that which brings me comfort and joy; seeing friends, travel, watching live cricket/rugby etc. Being sat down for the first 8 months of the lockdown all day long meant that I invested in a standing desk – which is brilliant! I also passionately believe that laughter restores the soul…..and in busy times where global schedules can be chaotic, finding humour is absolutely key. I listen to Jonny Vaughan on Radio X, and he makes me cry with laughter – which is both fantastic and restorative.
