Potential client asking questions 🤝 confirming potenital therapist compatibility. When a client contacts a potential therapist, either before or during the first session, they can ask the following questions to help them gain a better understanding of a provider's background and approach to LGBTQ+ care: - What is your background and training in providing LGBTQ+-affirming care? - What percent of your caseload identifies as LGBTQ+? - What do you find to be the biggest challenge in the LGBTQ+ community right now? (This question really gauges a provider's understanding of the LGBTQ+ community’s needs and systemic issues.) - What do you enjoy most about working with the queer community as a therapist? (This question demonstrates a provider's capacity to honor and celebrate queer joy.) If it’s important to a client, they can also ask if a provider identifies as LGBTQ+ themselves. While a provider can offer queer-affirming care without identifying as part of the queer community, it’s okay for clients to prefer working with a therapist who shares this important aspect of their identity. #mentalhealthmatters #pridemonth #therapy

Allyship is more than just a word—it's an action. In honor of #PrideMonth, here are a few tips on how to be an #ally:     1. Educate yourself! Did you know that according to a study last year by myGwork - LGBTQ+ Business Community,  3/4 of LGBTQ+ Women Still Fear Coming Out at Work.  2. Speak up when you see discriminatory behavior and language.  3. Listen! I’ve heard many stories of discrimination, we need to be more aware of what happens around us.     Listen, Advocate, and Educate yourself and others as allies. 🌈 June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate love, identity, and the vibrant diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. It's also a crucial time to acknowledge the challenges many LGBTQ+ young people face. The Trevor Project’s 2023 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ Young People revealed a heartbreaking statistic: 41% of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, with roughly half of transgender and nonbinary youth experiencing these thoughts. This Pride Month, let's come together to uplift and protect our LGBTQ+ youth. ✨ LGBTQ+ History Month ✨ In case you didn't know, February is LGBTQ+ History month. This month, we’ve been sharing tips on how you can be a better ally to the LGBTQ+ community, including how checking your own privilege helps you to be more supportive, calling out discrimination, and remembering that everyone is unique with individual lived experiences. 👉 Allyship Tip 4: Be receptive to feedback 👈 Being open, receptive and listening to feedback from other people is so important. They may want to highlight something you could have done differently, give some advice so you can be more supportive, or educate you on their lived experiences or those of the LGBTQ+ community.   Listening, not being defensive when being corrected, and allowing the other person to share openly with you will all go towards enabling you to be a better ally and better support to your LGBTQ+ peers! #lgbtqhistorymonth #inclusion #allyship #podtalent

✨ LGBTQ+ History Month ✨ In case you didn't know, February is LGBTQ+ History month. Last week, we shared the first in our series of tips on how you can be a better ally to the LGBTQ+ community, and how checking your privilege helps you to be more supportive to all marginalised groups, not just LGBTQ+ people. 👉 Allyship Tip 2: Call it out! 👈 Don’t underestimate the power of calling out micro-aggressions, people using incorrect pronouns, deadnaming, inappropriate jokes, or general discriminatory comments. It shouldn’t be the responsibility of members of the LGBTQ+ community to have to always stand up for themselves and point out when people are wrong – it’s everyone’s responsibility! Whether there are LGBTQ+ people present or not, calling out this behaviour every time it happens will hopefully lead to a safer and more comfortable environment for your LGBTQ+ colleagues. #lgbtqhistorymonth #inclusion #allyship #podtalent

This goes for anyone within the LGBTQ+ community (or any marginalised community for that matter!). Everyone’s lived experiences and situations are completely different and each person should be treated as an individual. Don’t make assumptions about how that person wants to be referred to, how much information they feel comfortable sharing, or how much support they need, based on other LGBTQ+ people you have met. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and as an individual, so take the time to understand each person. #lgbtqhistorymonth #inclusion #allyship #podtalent

To wrap up Pride Month, I just want to remind everyone that members of the LGBTQ+ community tend to have very different experiences with the US healthcare system than non-community members. Not only is access more difficult, they also tend to have more negative experiences with providers. If you're a provider, consider how you can make your practice more LGBTQ+ friendly! Educate yourself and staff on different genders, sexualities, and terminology, customize your intake forms, create a visually welcoming environment (E.G. putting out LGBTQ+ health brochures), and avoid making assumptions. Everyone makes mistakes. Don't aim for perfection—aim for growth and learning! By making yourself a welcoming provider, you contribute to the health of the LGBTQ+ population at large. #PrideMonth #Healthcare #LGBTQ #LGBTQHealth
