This is incredible! This time off will help officers rest, recharge, and manage mental health challenges to prevent burnout and safeguard job performance and public safety. Offering officers more control over their schedule is essential for maintaining their mental health and well-being. Time away allows officers to strengthen personal relationships and fulfill family responsibilities. It’s also key to attracting top talent in a competitive job market, especially younger generations, who value work-life balance. Here are some ways departments are adapting to offer more flexible schedules for their staff: 1️⃣ Utilizing police scheduling software can help manage officer schedules efficiently, enforce time off between shifts, limit night shifts, and incorporate officer preferences. 2️⃣ Allowing officers to request shift changes and time off to give them greater autonomy over their schedules. 3️⃣ Compressed workweeks, such as four 10-hour shifts instead of five 8-hour shifts, to give officers more consecutive days off. 4️⃣ Implementing forward-rotating shift schedules that gradually rotate through morning, afternoon, and evening shifts to help officers better adapt to changing schedules and reduce fatigue. 5️⃣ Offering part-time work options to attract a more diverse workforce, match staffing to peak call times, and save on costs compared to full-time schedules. 💬 Have you implemented any of the following flexible scheduling strategies? How has it impacted officer mental health and morale? Let me know in the comments!

A study out of the University of Oxford is making its rounds at work. I read this CBC piece so you don't go away with just the headline. My notes: - Do office wellness programs work? It depends. More evidence is likely needed. - Still, it's important to evaluate wellness programs so we can learn lessons and improve things. - Take evaluation with a grain of salt (study design shortfalls). - Volunteering on company time = impactful. - Wellness programs must be accessible to everyone, and barriers to participation assessed in evaluation. - Focus on initiatives that help employees form healthier habits. - Implement this model: "Plan, do, check, act." MOST IMPORTANTLY: - Pay, workload, and employee autonomy over how, when, and where they work are probably the most important to prioritize. - Take the burden off individuals, look at issues such as burnout as a systemic problem, and act appropriately.

👀 Did you know that Denmark has a Wellbeing Commission? Currently, the commission is considering the apparent stall in discussions about the wellbeing challenges faced by young people. They believe one stumbling block lies in the broadness of the term "mistrivsel" (ill-being or discomfort), making it difficult to come up with practical and specific ways to help. In response, the commission seek to actively redefine what falls under the umbrella of wellbeing and ill-being.. and what lies beyond – addressing the spectrum between what is seen as two poles. But there's a problem 💈 The idea of wellbeing and ill-being as two poles on a spectrum oversimplifies the complexity of youth experiences. Life is not neatly divided into clear opposites. Wellbeing is a dynamic and intricate interplay of various factors 💈 In this recent Altinget.dk article, commissioner Rasmus Meyer argues that the entire discourse on ill-being needs to break free from the confines of health-related jargon: "We aim to define a shared understanding of wellbeing, and we also want to liberate this discussion, so that it doesn't solely become a conversation confined to health sciences or psychology." Extending the discussion, we could go deeper in redefining the binary understanding of youth wellbeing 👩🔬 #wellbeingliteracy #wickedwellbeing #youth4health

This story is a stark reminder of the harsh reality many employees face worldwide. Despite fainting at work, a dedicated employee in Malaysia was denied a half-day medical leave. Shocking, isn't it? But sadly, it's not an isolated incident. As professionals, it's crucial to speak up against such injustices. Our workplaces should be safe havens that prioritize our well-being, not places where we're pushed to our physical and mental limits. Let's rally together for change! Employers, it's time to wake up! Your employees are your most valuable assets, and their health should be non-negotiable. It's high time we prioritize empathy, understanding, and support in the workplace. Share if you agree! Let's ignite a movement for healthier work environments. #EmployeeWellbeing #WorkLifeBalance #HealthComesFirst 🌟
