The Role of Tenure in Building a Meaningful Company Culture I’m late in sharing this, because a specific part of this interview struck a chord with me that I felt like I needed to sit with for a couple of days. Wes Carter's insights on company culture offer a profound perspective that instantly feels like a core truth I’ve always known: "Tenure is the core of culture." This hit hard. Culture isn't merely a set of activities or policies; it's a living, breathing identity shaped by the collective experiences of its members. Culture as Collective Identity: True culture stems from the shared stories and memories that embody the company's journey. These narratives carry wisdom, born from experiences over time, and form the bedrock of the organizational ethos. The Power of Stories: Stories within a company are not just for inspiration; they embed crucial lessons and values reinforced with perspective gained by time. They become the wisdom that guides new generations of employees, ensuring continuity and depth in the company's culture. These deep narratives can only come from those with experience, those who have adapted through change and persevered through struggle. Wisdom Over Cleverness: In environments where tenure is lacking, there's often a reliance on short-term cleverness rather than long-term wisdom. This can create a flashy but shallow culture, lacking the meaningful connections (and connected meanings) that drive belonging, loyalty, and engagement. HR through cost accounting might lead to cost savings… but at what cost? Turnover: A Cultural Threat: Turnover, then, is the biggest threat to long-term growth. Your people are not merely replaceable cogs that “do a thing.” They are nodes of wisdom that grow richer over time, and grow in connection with one another. High turnover disrupts this continuum of wisdom, making it the biggest threat to building a lasting culture. Retaining your best employees is THE means to preserving the institutional memory that forms a rich, authentic culture. That’s my key takeaway from this episode, but there’s a lot more here. Last week we launched the inaugural episode of our SUSXL TALKS series. We asked a panel of corporate sustainability leaders for their thoughts on the topic “COP28. So What. What Next?” What we were trying to find out is how relevant COP is to business action, ambition and transition in sustainability. Is it now just a talking shop between states? Should it be the focal point that it has become in the sustainability calendar? And moving COP aside, what should our business leaders be doing or focusing in on in 2024 to create meaningful impactful business change? It was an illuminating session attended by 70 business leaders on LinkedIn Live and Zoom. We’ve edited down some of what our panelists said and I’ll share a few of the interesting takes this week. Starting with Magali Anderson, ex-Chief Sustainability Officer at Holcim. Highlights: >Critical of the perception of sustainability as a complex and expensive undertaking >The imperative should be to shift from reporting to transforming business models >CEOs should be more like “Chief Environment Officers” >There is a critical need to move beyond mere rhetoric and talk of transition >Expressed some frustration at the slow progress despite years of the same machinations and hashtags >Suggesting (tongue-in-cheek) adopting a new hashtag slogan: “hashtag #FromActionToActionOnSteroids” rather than repeating the same calls to action >Sustainability must be seen as a business opportunity

🌍 Eviden Walk The Talk In Sustainability Event 🌳 Today, various executives gathered for the Eviden Walk The Talk In Sustainability event in Hoog Soeren, Apeldoorn. The event featured an engaging discussion on the current sustainability challenges faced by organizations. Key topics included the importance of leadership, a clear vision, and how to bring different parties together. We also touched on data being the new plastic, the need for new business models, and the importance of standardization and interoperability. Short-term solutions were also highlighted.
