Newborn Falls are a real issue for Postpartum/Newborn units. I am elated people are reaching out to get educated and learn best practices to prevent these falls- thank you National Perinatal Information Center and GE HealthCare Maternal Infant Division! I would love the opportunity to dig deeper with this issue and learn from our perinatal leaders out there on the direct and indirect causes of newborn falls. For example, how does the following items impact newborn fall rates: 1. Type of Perinatal Care Model (couplet vs. non-couplet) - is there more falls with one type over the other? 2. Staffing - does inadequate nurse staffing ratios impact rounding frequency (missed care and/or care rationing) - I'm sure there is a correlation here! 3. Unit Infrastructure and UAP Support - Does the geographical layout impact fall rates, and/or the amount of support from Unit Assisted Personnel? 4. Risk Assessments - do we have EBP Risk Assessments for Newborn Falls in place for all units? If not, what are the biggest barriers? 5. Maternal Education & Support - was the patient educated in the office, and or what type of in-room support does the mother have in the hospital? 6. 24-Hour Rooming in vs. Newborn Breaks Thoughts?
Over the past several weeks, the National Perinatal Information Center has had record-setting completion of the Newborn Falls and Drops: An Interactive Discussion to Achieve Best Practices. Many participants have stated they did not recognize #newbornfalls as a patient safety issue. And expressed a deep appreciation of the science behind sleep, particularly for immediate #postpartum mothers. This week, we are going to discuss a couple of the highlights from this course, including: ✔ Missed care ✔ Science of Sleep (yes, there is a science behind sleepiness!) ✔ Breastmilk production and nighttime ✔ Location of newborn falls We hope you will check out the Newborn Falls on-demand courses. NPIC was delighted to work with GE HealthCare Maternal Infant Division for the development of these courses. Creating space for these patient safety conversations is important.
