I’m excited to share the story of Dr. Nitya Wadhwa who, through collaborative teamwork, sought to prove that it’s impossible to separate the mom from the baby, because they are truly one. Immediate Kangaroo Care (iKMC) is transforming the way we care for preterm babies and their mothers. By implementing skin-to-skin contact, infant mortality has been proven to be reduced by 25% and we have the capacity to save even more lives. Observations in the making 🕵🏼♀️ Separation of mother and infant is (unfortunately) still current practice in most neonatal intensive care units worldwide. As a second study within my PhD I will explore separation and closeness practices in a neonatal intensive care unit, with a particular focus on the separation period and the first encounter between mother and infant.
