Our Friday Spotlight Goes To the: Native American Heritage Month 2023 November is National Native American Heritage Month. The U.S. Department of Labor celebrates the diverse culture and heritage of Tribal Nations and Indian people who deeply enrich the quality and character of our country. We also hope to use this month to highlight information that can lead to greater understanding and promote respect and equity. Throughout this country’s history, Tribal Nations and Indian people have experienced discrimination, inequity, cruelty, and violence. Even when faced with such adversity, Native Americans continued to protect their tradition and culture, support their community, and build for the future. Tribal Nations have exemplified courage and resilience. Today, there are over 500 Tribal Nations that make up the tapestry of governments across the country. Tribes exercise their sovereignty to deliver services and provide infrastructure to their citizens and adjacent communities. Tribal communities also serve as important economic and cultural hubs in the United States.

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the perseverance and courage of Indigenous peoples, show our gratitude for the myriad contributions they have made to our world, and renew our commitment to respect Tribal sovereignty and self-determination. The story of America’s Indigenous peoples is a story of their resilience and survival; of their persistent commitment to their right to self-governance; and of their determination to preserve cultures, identities, and ways of life. As we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, may we renew the enduring soul of our Nation-to-Nation relationships — a spirit of friendship, stewardship, and respect.

Did you know that November is #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth? This month is a time to honor, celebrate, and uplift the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of Indigenous people and to acknowledge the very important contributions made by their communities. It's a time to raise awareness and collectively educate ourselves surrounding the systemic challenges #Indigenous people have faced both historically and in the present, and the myriad of ways they are still fighting to overcome those challenges. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, this is a time to remind ourselves - as American citizens - whose lands we are occupying by means of colonization. North America’s Indigenous peoples have fought to preserve their cultures and dignity, despite facing violent dispossession of their lands by colonists, and deserve sovereignty and self-determination.

From Zero to Three: In many indigenous communities, children are viewed as sacred beings. They are earth’s most recent inhabitants and have a close connection to the Creator. For Native American communities, providing a strong start for their children includes enriching practices that respect and embrace their heritages, languages and cultures. June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis. Elders are respected individuals who play key roles in Indigenous communities. They are important knowledge keepers, and they also help to ensure cultural continuity. As living connections to the past, Elders serve as teachers, healers, advisors and counsellors. Elder knowledge is culturally specific, meaning Anishinaabeg teachings, for example, are not necessarily Haudenosaunee teachings. However, Elders share some commonalities; for instance, spirituality and tradition shape their lives as well as the guidance they provide to others. While Elders are often seniors, this is not always the case. Not all Indigenous seniors are Elders, and not all Elders are Elderly. An Elder is recognized as such by their Indigenous community. An Elder is meant to be non-judgmental and an excellent listener. Generally, they have a good understanding of self, shaped by life experience and knowledge of tradition and culture. Elders are humble people who never aspired or claimed the title until their communities and other Elders referred to them as such. In many Indigenous communities, and within families, Elders are referred to as aunties, uncles, grandmothers or grandfathers. Let's honour Elders and Ancestors.
