Utahns are more likely to work in the tech sector than workers in 41 other states — and the state is home to one of the country’s biggest concentrations of tech workers, in relation to the overall workforce. That’s according to a new ”State of the Tech Workforce” report, released earlier this week by CompTIA, a national association of tech workers. However, federal and state employment data also suggests that growth in Utah’s tech sector has stalled in recent years. Employment in Utah’s tech sector grew a fraction of a percent from 2022 to 2023, according to CompTIA’s report, which analyzed data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But it receded again in 2023, according to state employment data. There were nearly 2,000 fewer jobs in what the state classifies as the “Computer Systems Design and Related” sector this past February than there were in February 2023, and roughly 100 fewer jobs in “professional, scientific and technical services.” Utah’s tech employment growth also trailed behind national industry trends, according to the CompTIA report. CompTIA’s prediction that Utah’s tech industry will grow this year by as much as 5% mirrors national projections by the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ projections, which have the tech workforce in the United States growing twice as fast as the workforce at large. States are finding innovative ways to address IT staffing shortages. According to the 2022 Digital States Survey, CIOs were concerned that many government tech positions would remain unfilled due to upcoming waves of retirements. However, states like Indiana are taking steps such as removing 4-year degree requirements, providing earn-and-learn programs for non-technical hires, and increasing salaries to be more competitive. Quick gut check for those of you that hire IT talent: 💡 "Tech occupation employment over the next 10 years is expected to grow at about twice the rate (2x) of overall employment across the economy" (https://lnkd.in/gvZFxwyA) North American companies are facing a staffing dilemma as demand for IT talent drastically increases. How do you beat your competition to sustainably hire and retain top tech talent? Many companies will try the two extremes before looking at alternative options: 💰 First option, pay for the top talent in the US. Typically, this means you are competing with the large Tech organizations that are shelling out $200k-300k+ salaries. This works until you are understaffed because the budget doesn't allow enough flexibility to scale up a large enough team with those salaries. 💲 Second option, find the cheapest outsourcing option you can. This option comes paired with higher turnover rates when timezone/culture doesn't align. It is a short term fix... a "Band-Aid" solution. There is a third option that North American companies have increasingly taken notice of year over year: ✅ Nearshoring. Latin America has the highest retention rates in the IT world. It is a sustainable, long term option. 30-50% more cost effective than hiring in the US. While still maintaining 100% timezone alignment with Experts who speak fluent English. This is a perfect blend of the two extremes to find a long term, sustainable growth solution for your team.
