Have you ever rewarded yourself for failing?
Sounds ridiculous, right?
But yes, that's exactly what I mean. Do something, and when it doesn't go your way as planned, you reward yourself, anyway.
I learnt this many years back when I was still in high school. I learned it from a friend, an alumnus who had been invited back to admonish the team I was currently leading.
At first it sounded so strange to me too when he shared the concept, but soon I had an opportunity to practice it and then I fully understood it.
Here's how I did it...
I sat for a Maths paper and by the end of that examination time, I could predict the results and in summary nothing looked good enough. I knew that when the results return I'd have a C- at best. I felt bad. All the sleepless nights and discussions didn't seem to have paid off.
Remembering this concept, I decided I should give myself a treat. I headed to the canteen and bought myself some better food and drinks and intentionally skipped the school food. Well school food is usually far from anyone's favorite (If you've been there you can attest).
Small gesture but meant something big behind by pattern.
This is the principle I was trying to establish:
Regardless of the results, I am proud of myself. I celebrate the dedication, commitment and all the efforts I put in to prepare for the opportunity.
The marks (results) didn't define me to make me less of my true self. I was still smart, wise, intelligent and bright regardless of the mathematical problems I couldn't solve at that moment.
This is the same approach to life. Regardless of whatever setbacks you've suffered before, celebrate the silver lining in the story. Applaud yourself for the intention, the effort and hard work you've putting in. You're much more than that negative result.
When you learn to do this, you will easily get over the setbacks and rather use them as stepping stones to aim higher and keep striving for better.
Today I don't remember those mathematical problems, but I recall the attitude that the experience sowed in me. It taught me to appreciate myself regardless....
This is called self love!
