Let's talk a little about load. Today's Icecast messages are on client counts. #Icecast keeps track on how many concurrent clients are currently connected. This is compared to the limits from the configuration. To protect your deployment in case of something going haywire Icecast will reject clients once the limit is reached. Good values for the limit depend a lot on the individual deployment. If you expect few clients setting the limit low increases protection. On the other hand you should set the limit not too tight as sometimes you might have more clients than expected. Good values range from around 128 to around 16384. Most often the actual limit of a deployment is its #network connection, not Icecast or the hardware. One tool to help you finding a good value is now directly build into Icecast: Once Icecast senses that you reached more than 75% or 90% of your limit it will report with a message on the dashboard (as shown below). This is not yet a problem. If you for example reach 75% while the most popular show is running this is most likely fine. On the other hand if Icecast is constantly showing the 90% warning you should reconsider your limit. Also if you're running a #cluster and spot those warnings more frequently on one of your nodes it is a sign that your #loadbalancer has some asymmetry.
