We are pleased to announce that we have selected Waga Energy to produce Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) at our City of Beaumont Landfill facility. The RNG will be used to support our increased production of #OCIHyfuels green methanol. A key pillar for the energy transition, RNG is a local, renewable energy source that can substitute fossil natural gas:   💫 The RNG will be produced via a gas collection system on the City of Beaumont Landfill to recover the landfill gas spontaneously produced by organic waste. This gas will be upgraded into RNG through a WAGABOX® unit and injected into the nearby gas infrastructure. 💚 The facility will avoid up to 27,440 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions annually, equal to cutting the emissions from 2.8 million gallons of gasoline per year.* 🌟 As well as reducing CO2eq emissions, obtaining biogas from landfill captures and uses methane that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere. 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞. I am a great advocate for anaerobic digestion and dark fermentation as the most obvious and environmentally friendly choices for biomass treatment. However, methane losses from AD plants compromise sustainability of renewable energy generation. Is great news to see the EA taking action on this space with their recently published methane action plan, although I would argue that methane abatement is core to corporate responsibility and all AD operators should aim to be ahead of the policy curve in delivering. To protect the climate, we need trees to grow not burn. The World Resources Institute (WRI) and the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development are considering how to account for the climate effects of biomass use in revising the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Land Sector and Removal Guidance. EASAC work makes it abundantly clear that proper carbon accounting is critical to assessing the real effects on the climate of biomass harvesting, particularly for energy production. The scientific analyses show to what extent the real effects on climate differ from those claimed by supporters of current bioenergy policies that universally label bioenergy as ‘renewable’ and equate it with solar, wind and other renewable energies. Therefore, EASAC sent a letter to both organisations to caution them on the widespread misuse of accounting for carbon emissions in using forest biomass for energy. The labelling of woody bioenergy as ‘renewable’ is based on the assumption that the carbon in the biomass and its associated emissions when burned can be treated as zero because the forest will regrow and re-absorb the carbon in the biomass harvested. Yet, this concept of carbon neutrality ignores the time lag between emissions and reabsorption of the original carbon which multiple studies show can be as long as decades or centuries. “We are too close to exceeding 1.5° C temperature rise to think in terms of regrowth over several decades”, explains EASAC’s Environment Director, Professor Michael Norton. “It’s the next few years that are decisive.” ➡ https://lnkd.in/eRJWciQE #biomassenergy #climatechange Wim van Saarloos Lars Walloe Anne F.
