Great for the IASC to speak to the international partnership of the Interparliamentary Taskforce on Human Trafficking about why tackling the exploitation of children and young people is critical and a priority for the office. The IASC spoke about what needs to be done to prevent children from being exploited by criminal gangs, what can we done to protect and identify more children who need processionals support, and why more must be done to increase prosecutions of the perpetrators of these crimes.
Yesterday, we were honored to host UK Anti-Slavery Commissioner Eleanor Lyons at our Quarterly Convening. Among other things, she shared an alarming statistic that 44% of those in the UK National Referral Mechanism (NRM) were exploited as children. She shared a policy solution to protect these missing children, and we are hopeful for its global implementation. Taking a stand against human trafficking starts locally and personally. In our communities, we must push for ordinances to shut down illicit businesses that enable exploitation. In our homes, it’s about open conversations—teaching kids about online risks and ensuring they know they have a safe place to share anything they encounter. By fighting human trafficking together, we can create safer environments for our children and stronger, more secure communities. Let’s act now. What are your thoughts? Today starts #AntiSlaveryWeek in the UK, in the run up to Anti-Slavery Day on Friday 18 October, created to raise awareness of all forms of exploitation associated with modern slavery and human trafficking. What can learn about modern slavery? The first question we often get is about the scale of it. It is challenging to accurately quantify the prevalence of modern slavery in the UK. While a range of prevalence estimates exist, the scale of modern slavery IDENTIFIED across the UK is continuing to increase: ➡️ Between 2015, when the Modern Slavery Act was introduced, and 2023, there has been a 421% increase (from 3,263 to 17,004) in the number of potential victims identified by First Responders and referred to the UK’s National Referral Mechanism (NRM), the identification and support system for survivors of modern slavery.
