The pathfinder partnership, a new service across Greater Manchester, is providing much-needed support for survivors of sexual abuse and violence who have additional mental health needs. While existing sexual assault and abuse services can help with sexual trauma, they’re not always able to deal with complex mental health issues which may impact someone’s recovery. This new service has already supported over 50 survivors. It’s led by our Greater Manchester Resilience Hub, in partnership with Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust's sexual assault referral centre (SARC), We Are Survivors., MANCHESTER ACTION ON STREET HEALTH, TRC Sexual Abuse & Rape Support Greater Manchester and Greater Manchester Rape Crisis. Colleagues got together last week to talk about their progress and how to support more survivors with additional mental health needs.

Day 7.... Recently, I was involved in a discussion about sexual assault, its effects and ways to curb it. During the course of the discussion, we came up with some points. The Effects - Loss of self identity - Drug addiction - Emotional trauma - Mental health issues, and lots more Ways to Curb It - Positive parenting - Enlightenment - Be a source of encouragement - Policy Advocacy, and lots more I will be explaining these points as time goes on... #endsexualassault #preciousakindeseptemberlinkedinchallenge

October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month and the statistics are staggering: - 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience physical violence from an intimate partner with impacts that include injury, fearfulness, PTSD, and use of victim services. - On average, 20 people are physically abused per minute by an intimate partner in the U.S., adding up to more than 10 million women and men annually. - In 2021, an estimated 1,800 women were murdered in the U.S., 65% of those homicides committed by a current or former intimate partner Victims should never be blamed for the abuse they have suffered. It’s unthinkable to me that when some people hear about abuse of others they want to silence the survivors. HR and behavioral health professionals are in a unique position to help those affected by domestic violence. Providing information about counselors and therapists, finding community support groups, and offering time away from the office for counseling and mental health days are ways that leadership can be a source of support and strength. #DomesticAbuseAwareness #AbuseSurvivors #DomesticAbuse

One of the most damaging myths that seems to persist is that people with mental illness are more violent than the general public. Our new local Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment (HART) Hub, approved to operate in Brockville and Smiths Falls, will expand our reach and support more clients’ diverse needs. “I do think that this is our best opportunity to help the people who are living with those very complex mental health and substance use concerns,” Kim Gifford, LLGAMH CEO, said in an interview with The Recorder & Times earlier this week.
