Singapore and Malaysia are building the new “Shenzhen”: In an era of tariff wars and onshoring narratives, Regional Mega Hub is the right path. Why ? Infrastructure, labor availability, investments attraction, innovation readiness …Often one single country/region does not own ALL the ingredients for economic success recipe. Therefore it calls for meaningful alliances and scale effets to compensate the missing pieces. Most westerners are unfamiliar with the region of Johor, pretty much like two decades ago no one heard of Shenzhen which turned out to be the epicenter of manufacturing and innovation for China and beyond. Special mention for manufacturers reconfiguring your global #supplychain: Johor is already known for food processing industry with notable global players like Netslé, Danone… The right path is rarely the path of least resistance though — entrepreneurial determination and political vision do matter, especially at crossroads. The governments of Malaysia and Singapore exchanged the agreement for the establishment of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone in January 2025. Broadly, the zone seeks to promote and support investment and free-up movement of goods and people between Malaysia and Singapore. ➡️ Nestled between two thriving economies, the zone will capitalize on the geographical advantages of both Johor and Singapore. ➡️ With tax incentives, streamlined regulatory processes, and improved infrastructure, the zone is positioned to attract global businesses. ➡️ The zone seeks to be a hub for advanced industries, particularly those focused on sustainability and innovation. For example, the zone is also expected to become a data centre hub with support from the Malaysian Government.  ➡️ Singapore and Malaysia are both former British colonies with similar legal systems.
