When I discussed about olden days navigation, he explained DR position fixing system which I have only heard of and did some studies in college days. . . However, when I joined my first ship back in 2004, GPS infrastructure was already in place and we used to plot ships’ GPS positions on the chart. Of course my Chief officer used to push us to plot celestial fixes using Sextant 🫠 (A sextant is a doubly reflecting navigation instrument that measures the angular distance between two visible objects. The primary use of a sextant is to measure the angle between an astronomical object and the horizon for the purposes of celestial navigation). . . . . The best time to use it was dawn or dusk - you get 3 celestial bodies including sun or moon and you have to identify one less star 😉 with the clear sight of horizon. . . . . .
