Thank you to Simran S. for presenting such an engaging webinar on the topic of Embracing Conflict in Design Work to the Outwitly Talent Community. Disagreement and conflict are common in the workplace, especially for designers, because our work requires challenging the status quo to design better user experiences. Today's session taught us how to reach our end goal of designing experiences that truly make an impact while navigating difficult conversations and pushback. Three big takeaways from Simran's presentation are... 👉 The truth is, we all need a safe space to be able to question our beliefs, thoughts, and ideas, AND we must create a safe space for others to share their beliefs, thoughts, and ideas that may be different from ours. Try as we may, no one can force change on us. Change stems from all of us! 👉 There is a specific pattern that creates a culture of fear, but it doesn't have to be this way. Contract with an agency or hire full time employees? This is a debate many companies have at various points in their life cycle. While the initial thought for many is to exercise due diligence and select one or the other, the answer isn’t black and white. Most companies inevitably arrive at the conclusion they can and should adopt a hybrid approach, which typically yields the best results and maximizes value for all stakeholders. Many of our clients (particularly at the enterprise level) have their own FTEs who possess a similar skill set as our team at Calibrate; yet they still work with us for a myriad of reasons including ramping up resources to help tackle critical features in their product backlog and transforming the UI/UX of their web or mobile app to refresh their brand & create a more frictionless end user experience. This decision wasn't made lightly, but it's one that has brought immense clarity and improved results both for my clients and my business. This picture never fails to make me smile. It nicely illustrates my point about the importance of both frontend and backend (=back office processes). How often have you encountered a nice and "shiny" customer interface that initially raised your expectations, only to be disappointed because it couldn`t handle basic requests effectively? Don`t get me wrong - offering digital services along the customer journey such as Quote, Book, Track through an online platform is essential. That`s meanwhile a no-brainer. However, (to stay with a Quote example) when a customer requests an online quote and can input all necessary details within only a few minutes (assuming UI/UX Team has done an excellent job 😉 ) it`s equally important to provide fast (instant) quotes. If the customer online request is still processed manually, with someone assembling the necessary details (i.e. rate, product, etc.) you risk losing the customer from the online loop. This would negate potential productivity & efficiency gains, and undermine the investment in the platform solution, whether developed in-house or purchased. I have had the priviledge of participanting in three platform projects in the forwarding industry. On one occasion, the project was initiated by a business unit (i.e. airfreight department), while the other were driven by the IT/Digital Office. The most collaborative and well-supported experience was when the project was initiated by the business unit. In these instances, the projects received full support and resources were allocated appropriately. When initiating a project from the IT/Digital Office, I recommend early assessment of the digital maturity of business processes with the respective department (i.e. air) to understand the potential efforts required from the business side. This early evaluation allows for defining priorities, assigning resources, and ensuring a collaborative path forward. To conclude, a superior digital customer experience encompasses both an intuitive, user-friendly frontend and efficient, well-functioning back office processes.
