There's nothing mysterious about a whiteboard. It is a white board. You can write on it. You can wipe that writing off (we've all done the Sharpie thing, own it). They are widely available at widely advertised prices, and nobody gives a hoot what you're going to put on those boards. It is for this reason that they are perhaps the most useful tool in helping people to understand #entperprisearchitecture. Their simplicity is their key to unlocking the dark arts of application lifecycle management, or the mythical skill of value chain divination. A whiteboard can show all kinds of orthodox EA views, and seamlessly combine them with information from the untamed world of consultancy. Imagine if buying a whiteboard was complicated. Why do you want a whiteboard? What are you going to write on the whiteboard? You're going to draw on it? How many people are going to look at the whiteboard? Will people take pictures of the whiteboard? Just no!!!! Is it any wonder that people slope off and use the collaborative drawing tools, usually with their free accounts. (I could talk at length about why this is bad) And that's all cool because it's less of a pain in the backside than buying enterprise architecture software. And before you ask. I'd want a decent fraction of what that consultancy would be worth. Hardly seems fair, does it?

How to choose an EA tool? 🤔 1️⃣ What comes first, practice or tooling? We often see an interest in starting with one or the other, but does it matter? Does it affect your practice if you choose one tool over another? 2️⃣ When is the right time to invest? Do you need to invest, can you just subscribe and pay as you go? 3️⃣ Have you ever considered that some tools are good at "modelling" allowing you to model anything, while others are more "ready-made" or "flexible" relying on a practice-based information model that can be adjusted, almost just needing change and data to show value. Which approach is best for whom? 4️⃣ Sometimes architects focus on notations and "intentional design" where the architects spend time and effort to set colours, placement on the screen, elements, and relationship types. Other times, they do almost the opposite, focusing on "data-driven design" delivered by tooling. Which approach is best for your situation? 5️⃣ Which type of tool to fit your situation – do you start with business architecture, or do you start with another architecture domain? Is every domain equally good as a starting point? 6️⃣ Finally, build or buy? When is the right situation “to build” or enable an EA Portal and when “to buy” a service that is delivering architecture as a service? How to choose an EA tool?
