Show of hands, how many social media heads/ directors/ managers/writers/specialists leave work out of the portfolio because after 18 rounds of edits and legal and compliance, it no longer resembles anything you could claim? 🙋♀️ Of course you need to be mindful of legal and compliance regulations, and company leadership should absolutely be aware and involved in all messaging. But your social media hire knows what will and will not gain you traction. If you need to control your messaging, let go of traditional growth metrics. Consider your strategy to be a monologue of service offerings, and that is ok. If you want to leverage social media to generate leads or cultivate deeper brand engagement or enable sales, trust your social media team to do what they do, even if it feels a tad unhinged. Having been on all sides of social- agency, clients, corporate, C-leaders, high stake, low stake, personal- I can tell you there is no one strategy fits all. Have an honest conversation with your social person to discuss limits and goals. Ideally, they will push the envelope, and you will keep it in the necessary fences.
please don't do "here's what I'd do if I ran the social media for..." posts it just makes the social teams at those companies, who so desperately WANT to be doing those things, sad

It’s always easier for someone who doesn’t do the job to say how they would do the job … until they actually have to do the job. It’s the same for any professional role, really, but particularly for social media managers. It’s easy to critique a business’s social content. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. From the outside, we have no idea of the internal politics involved in getting content approved by senior leadership, legal, product teams etc. Or the million and one other things that make reality so much harder than sniping from the sidelines. Some social media managers aren’t even involved in producing content at all. My job involves the 90% of the iceberg that is beneath the surface: agencies, tech, processes, compliance, trying to get 500 accounts across 40-odd countries to work in a common way. So, yeah, anyone who thinks a social media manager’s job is solely about doing better content - the 10% of the iceberg you can see - isn’t proving how smart they are. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Something I heard recently that is good advice for everyone to consider before you post on social media: 1. Does it need to be said? 2. Does it need to be said by me? 3. Does it need to be said by me right now?
