The topics covered during the first week of the internship were: Personal Branding "The Influence of Personal Branding in Facing Tech Winter" What is Tech Winter? The term "Tech Winter" is used to describe a period when investment in the technology sector drastically declines. This leads to many startups and tech companies facing financial difficulties and a loss of investor confidence. Impact of Tech Winter 1. Layoffs and Workforce Reduction: Many companies or organizations resort to laying off employees in the technology field to reduce operational costs. 2. Decline in Investment: The decreased confidence of investors in the tech sector leads to a reduction in investment. Many companies, organizations, and individuals experience this, especially in the technology sector. So, Why is Personal Branding important and What is its influence in this situation? 1. Expanding Network: Individuals with strong personal brands tend to have broader networks, which can be a valuable source of job or project opportunities during tough times. 2. Building Trust and Credibility: A solid personal brand showcases one's expertise and experience, helping to build trust and credibility with employers or potential clients. Let's talk interns. For a while now I've been hearing of companies pulling back on, or cancelling, their intern programs. Its a tough market, and a tough spot to be in, but the reality is an internship is a really important part of the career journey for the next generation of talent. It's not just a summer job, or a chance to get some practical experience hours so they can graduate, it's also a chance to dip a toe in the waters of their chosen career, and a dose of self confidence that what they offer as an employee is valuable. So I thought I'd share some ideas on how to run a successful internship - whether your business is big or small, even if you only take one intern. Clear Expectations: Before the intern starts, ensure they understand their role. Provide a clear job description and find out what they hope to gain from the experience. Onboarding: Treat your intern like any new employee by offering a proper onboarding process. Introduce them to the team, explain the company culture, and give them an office tour at a minimum. Assign a Mentor or Manager: Designate a person to guide them - to answer questions, provide feedback, and help the intern navigate their tasks. Think about how to recognise that mentor in their performance review too. Meaningful Work: Give your intern tasks that are meaningful and contribute to the business, involve them in projects where they can learn and make an impact. They'll feel valued and engaged. Feedback: Schedule regular check-ins to discuss progress, challenges, and achievements. Constructive feedback is crucial for their development. Encourage Learning: Allow them to attend meetings, participate in training, ask questions and take initiative in their learning. Be inclusive: Create a welcoming atmosphere. Encourage their team to include them in team and social activities, connect them with groups or clubs they might relate to. Recognise Achievements: Acknowledge their contributions and successes. This will go a long way in making them feel appreciated and motivated. Networking: Introduce your intern to key contacts within the business. It's invaluable for their career development and helps them build connections that could benefit them in the future. Have a plan: At the end of the internship, get their feedback on their experience. This can provide insights into how your program can be improved. Be clear about any future work opportunities - bringing them back in as a graduate decreases your cost to hire, and gains you a loyal team member who not only fits your culture, but also has a beginners understanding of the business. So, even if it's just one intern, fight for that placement. Give our next generation of talent their first chance.

Meet the team behind the innovative event management platform, SpaceSync, led by past Curtin University students, Tom Koenig, François Loose and Nick Wylynko, previous champions of the Curtin Global Pitching Competition 2023. Simultaneously with their pitching competition success, Tom and Francois graduated with their Masters in International Business and Entrepreneurship. In the midst of their studies, the two entrepreneurs were granted acceptance into the Curtin entrepreneurial programs, #Ignition2023 and #Accelerate2024, which contributed to the process of defining SpaceSync and the beginnings of the commercialisation phase. Enabled by extensive learning and active engagement opportunities founded in their university degrees, Tom and Francois have built a company to reimagine the entire event application and management process. From saving time by reducing administrative burdens to simplifying the current method for creating and applying for events, their one-stop platform is the solution. In support of Tom and Francois’ business ventures, the Curtin Faculty of Business and Law Engagement team have connected SpaceSync with students seeking internship opportunities. These internships provide students with the ability to further their studies and apply them in a practical, low-pressure environment. Through this mentorship program, SpaceSync has had four student interns join the team to assist with Project Management, Marketing Communications and Website Development. Most recently, SpaceSync has worked alongside the Curtin Women in Business team to organise the Annual Spring Market on campus. This test of trust and the ongoing hard work of the SpaceSync team proved a success, with positive feedback from the WIB team on the SpaceSync platform and its performance. Into the future, SpaceSync will be reaching out to event organisers looking for an innovative way to manage their upcoming events. If you're a graduate student and are looking for an exciting summer internship, check out our summer associate program at Instiglio. Apply now! https://lnkd.in/di-gC_aW Just a few additional notes. We are just launching our 5-year ambitious scale-up plans and a variety of interesting opportunities may emerge, in addition to our regular experience working on results-based finance and incentive reforms, such as: 1. Working in our new 'empowerment hub' on launching a 'Government Effectiveness Network' that aims to convene, rapidly grow and empower a large global community of civil servant champions in engineering government's transformation of its institutions into high-performing and responsive institutions. This network will likely leverage tech, ai, and is one of the most exciting new initiatives we've launched lately. Julia Loraque and Sebastian Chaskel are leading. 2. Supporting our climate practice: this is a rapidly growing practice area in Instiglio, with a focus on developing Advance Market Commitments and other pull financing mechanisms to accelerate the creation and adoption of green technologies (such as clean cooling, and green cement) in close partnership with U Chicago. Ben Stephens leads this work. 3. Asia exploration: we're engaging in an exploratory year in Asia to identify new pathways of impact in the region that could forge our strategy there in the next years. Siegrid Holler leads this work. 3. Building our own impact measurement and management frameworks: We have an internal impact team that's in charge of providing governance and holding the org accountable for its impact. This team is revising and upgrading our impact measurement and management approach this year. This work goes beyond indicators and measurement, into questions of governance, and organizational culture and practices. Siegrid Holler leads this work. 4. Business development and strategy: This is a great area of focus for those wanting to pair exposure to international development actors with developing organizational management and strategy skills. They will work directly with me and our COO to articulate business growth plans, strategies and tactics, and support implementation of those within our 'transformation team', an internal strategy and BD team. I or Gareth O'Hagan would be happy to speak to folks. Also, just to note that while many of these roles would benefit from Bogota presence, we are flexible regarding location, given we have offices in the US, Bogota, Nairobi, Rabat and Mauritius, and are happy to discuss sensible locations and arrangements with candidates. #jobswithpurpose #climatechange #summerinternship
