Next week, it takes place again as a free, virtual event from 10-12 September, bringing you a wealth of information on patient engagement in health research. The event was led by an international steering committee of patient partners and supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada. Over three days, the virtual conference delved into topics such as boosting skills development, advancing health research innovation, and raising the benchmarks for best practices in patient engagement. The conference was disease agnostic and covered broad themes in patient engagement in research rather than focusing on specific diseases. PxP created a global forum for patient partners to learn about topics that are important to them versus topics others felt were important for them to hear about. It also shares its own co-creation frameworks that can be applied by other people and organisations to future patient-led initiatives, including a patient partner steering committee and various structured feedback mechanisms. Accessibility and Building Code Calling all Canadians who do built environment accessibility. "Harmonization" had been a red flag for us, especially for those in Ontario where accessibility requirements, as low bar as they are, are at least more progressive. The worry is harmonization historically means not bring everyone forward, but to compromise and progress is lost. But how can that be acceptable when access and inclusion are Human Rights issues? Instead how can harmonization this time help us move us more quickly to align with 40 year old Charter of Rights and Human Rights codes. The forces in this country that want things to stay as they are or keep change slow and "reaonable" don't or haven't understand that's discrimination. How has greed, bias, ablesim and standard practice been allowed to be the forces that have kept progress so rediculously slow? We need and know what we should and could be doing to rapidly improve equity, dignity, independence, inclusion and respect for our largest minority group, and the only minority we can all join at some point. We know there's nothing more responsible or sustainable than accessibility, especially from the start. Legislation and education are the ultimate starts points. Are you coming?
