It is been over a year since I moved to Silicon Valley. The name always was synonymous to dream for me. Ever since I knew about the country United States, I always heard that Silicon Valley is "the place" if you want to be in tech domain as this is the hub of start ups and innovative ideas. There was a point when golden gate was my iphone's wallpaper. Now that I made it to the "Valley" and have called it my home for over a year, I have some take away.    To me the valley comes with some perks and some drawbacks, as you walk down the Ghirardelli square or walk towards the Salesforce tower or go to Ferry's Building to buy cheese from the Sunday market or stand in queue to get yourself a BOBA, you hear people pitching in tech ideas to each other, talk about app development, talk about how bad the job hop is. Yes, to Silicon valley no idea is a dumb idea but every idea could be a great idea. I was awestruck when the first time I sat at a Starbucks near Google's Mountain view office and strangers just initiating small talks and start talking about the recent tech trends.     People say they find Silicon valley beautiful as they are just couple of hours away from ocean, mountains, snow and desert. But this place also makes you lonely and make you feel the immense need to be better(not that its wrong, but it gets to individual at times) The house rents and houses for buying are skyrocketed here and taxes... you will get used to it, but it is HIGH. The traffic is high too. Everyone working to get the highest TC or talking about tech gets monotonous. Unknowingly you sign up for the rat race just like your gym's premium subscription which you never used.     Though to me the valley looks very dry in summer and stays green only for couple of months, it echoes Google, Meta, Apple, Countless Start ups, Pacific, Boba in the midst of the cries of layoffs and race to top and this is why people (including me) found this place fascinating.    #siliconvalley #jobs #experience #takeaways #USA #corporatelife #bayarea #immigrantlife

TRUTH IS --- In past years, I wouldn't hesitate to jump 🦘on a plane for tech networking events in the Bay Area. But: the culture of my most common client -- the (funded) hardware startup developing its ~3rd version ⚾⚽🏈of a product -- has changed. A LOT. It used to be that their engineers 🙆♂️ had more of a feeling of ownership of their work and even the startup. They'd spend their free time ⛱️ going to networking events to find resources and expert advice 👴 to help advance their projects. 📈 That's where I'd often meet them (and teach them that optical engineering is a thing). Now, a lot of startups act more like old-school corporations, right down to the layoffs, 🪓 and the hardware pros behave accordingly. When the workday is over, these engineers clock out in all the ways. I don't find them anymore at tech networking events I've gone to since COVID. But SF Tech Week has SO MUCH stuff going on. In the first two weeks of 2024, 46 tech companies announced layoffs affecting ~7,500 employees. Notable mentions include Google, Amazon, Discord, and Apple. At Intrinsic Digital, we're a bootstrapped company, and we are fortunate to not have to experience this. It's not always easy to run a company without investment dollars. It means that you only hire and grow as your clients and revenue grow. It can create ceilings that you have to push through. But it also means that we're not chasing future profit. I'm tired of the Europe vs Silicon Valley narrative. I agree with Tom and others that there ARE problems with the UK & European ecosystem and it's incredibly frustrating: (1) A complete lack of Series-A plus #deeptech capital. (2) Many investors who still don't understand how venture really works or who themselves have a scarcity mindset. (3) Founders who are too timid of ambition (or lack the support or knowledge around them to run at their vision no holds barred; see my previous point) to go big or go home. BUT we will never be The Bay area. The rest of the USA is not generally like The Bay area. Meanwhile there is plenty we can change about the UK and in Europe to leverage the amazing brains, engineers and technical IP we have. We just need to find the ambition and the will to do so. To vote in politicians who get it (can someone tell me where they are please? 😁 ) and in the case of the UK, dig up that Victorian "can be done" spirit and stop this wallowing in self pity "it's everyone else's fault" mentality and "woe no Empire" narrative. I did my first start up in 1997. I raised my first angel tickets by sending faxes. Around 2012 I switched to investing because I was sick of dealing with VC's in UK and Europe who clearly didn't get it: they were all capital and no venture. But if you are fed up with the status quo - do something about it. Saul has been doing so for years, so should you. There ARE investors like LocalGlobe, 7percent Ventures and many others who will back the crazy ideas. If you're a founder, go find investors who have an abundance mindset...and put the phone down on those who don't.
