The nonprofit has since donated over 24 million meals and rescued more than 2.4 million pounds of food. The belief persists that hunger relief organizations are operating under outdated models which deride dignity and limit choice, and it’s a driving force in the pay-what-you-can restaurant movement. Since the nonprofit dining model took shape about 20 years ago, it’s gained a sturdy foothold in the South. The region is home to about one-third of the 14 venues affiliated with One World Everybody Eats (OWEE), a national consortium of cafes without set prices, including new pay-what-you-can restaurants planned for New Orleans and Pittsboro. Industry experts estimate there are dozens more independent venues nationwide relying on a combination of charitable donations and customer payments to underwrite luncheonettes where patrons can choose to forgo all or part of the tab, although about the same number have come and gone since the concept got buzzy. https://lnkd.in/ej3dWphi

Retain 70% of donors after 3 gifts?!?! 👀 I saw this video a while back (sorry, GaryV and language) where if you get a customer from one visit --> third, the likelihood of them returning after the 3rd visit is 70%! The same is true according to the Fundraising Effectiveness Project, 3-6 donations retain at 72%; and if you get to 7+, you are at 88% 🔥🔥 Keep at it, and enjoy the video; some ideas translate into the nonprofit space.

Fundraiser’s Dinner Etiquette Tip #6: Table Manners When dining at a fundraising event, table manners go a long way in showing respect for those around you. Here are a few tips to keep in mind: ✅ Elbows off the table – Keeping your elbows away from the table not only shows good manners but also prevents accidental spills! ✅ Don’t reach across others – Instead of leaning or stretching to grab an item, ask politely with a phrase like, “Could you please pass the salt?” and always say “thank you” afterward. ✅ Pass items to the right – For food items like bread or salad dressings, pass to the right. If you’re the one starting the bread basket, offer it first to the person on your left, then take some for yourself, and continue passing to the right. ✅ Salt and pepper go together – Pass the salt and pepper as a pair, even if only one was requested. And if someone asks you to pass them, don’t pause to use them yourself. ✅ Be mindful of hygiene – Avoid blowing your nose or picking your teeth at the table. Excuse yourself if necessary, and definitely don’t use your napkin for anything other than wiping your hands or mouth. This is just up the road from Dufftown, in Elgin. A Foodbank. Are the people of Moray not embarrassed that a SINGLE Firm, (yet just 8% of the entire Scotch Whisky Industry), can take out HALF A BILLION DOLLARS, from the clearly impoverished area, in just a year? Why ON EARTH do we have a Foodbank here? It's only 18 miles drive, between Dufftown and Elgin. Have you been to Elgin? Have you been to Dufftown? There nothing much paved with Gold! It's a similar story, all over Scotland. If you go to most Scottish Foodbanks, they're usually beside a Distillery, Maturation Shed, Cask Manufacturer or Bottler. When are we having a Scotch Whisky Tourism Strategy and Budget? One that gives back, to the areas of Scotland who make the stuff and doesn’t just take. The Scotch Whisky Association knows it's ridiculous, that why they won't let me tag them, on here! There's an App to tell you where the nearest Foodbank is, there's NOT one to tell you where the nearest Distillery is... Does ANYONE care? Here’s a breakdown of what the experience at Kings Church Food Bank seems to look like: Welcoming Atmosphere: When clients arrive, they’re greeted by the friendly Hope Portsmouth Team, ensuring that the experience is warm and inviting from the very start. Comfortable Waiting Area: Instead of waiting in a stark, impersonal line, clients receive a numbered ticket at reception and are then invited into a room where they can relax with a free cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit. This helps create a more dignified and relaxed experience. Community and Support: While waiting, clients can interact with staff from various support services, like Citizens Advice Portsmouth, and learn about other programs under Hope Portsmouth like the ROC+COACH Community Mentoring Programme, Circle of Support, and more. These services offer broader support beyond just food. Donations and Swap Table: Clients have access to a box of donations where they can pick up up to three items. They can also swap items from their food parcels on the swap table, giving them more agency and control over what they receive. Child-Friendly and Confidential Areas: For families, there’s a designated child-friendly space, making it easier for parents to focus on their own needs while children are entertained. Confidential areas are also available for those who may want to discuss sensitive matters privately. Additional Resources: In addition to food, the food bank also offers hygiene and household items (subject to availability). Clients can request referrals to the Portsmouth Baby Bank and access support for specific needs like bathroom products and cleaning supplies. A Calming Environment: Throughout the space, there’s music playing, and the overall environment is calm, warm, and welcoming. This goes beyond the typical food bank experience, where the focus is on providing not just physical sustenance, but emotional support and a sense of community. The Kings Church Food Bank is a well-rounded, compassionate service that sees its clients as more than just recipients of food. Fundraiser’s Dinner Etiquette Tip #5: Napkin Etiquette Napkin placement may seem minor, but it’s a key part of dining etiquette! Here’s how to handle it like a pro: ➡️ Follow your host’s lead – Typically, you’ll want to place your napkin on your lap shortly after sitting, folded in half with the fold towards your waist. But if your host waits, you should too. ➡️ Keep it on your lap – Your napkin should stay on your lap throughout the entire meal. If you need to step away, place it on your chair or to the left of your plate to signal to the server that you’ll be back. ➡️ Never use your napkin to blow your nose! - Excuse yourself and blow your nose with a tissue in the restroom. ➡️ Watch for the host’s cue – When your host places their napkin on the table, it’s a sign that the meal has ended. As the owner of a food business, I founded Friends of Codey’s out of necessity. I saw a gap and chose to fill it. There were shared kitchens… but food entrepreneurs had to “figure it out” on their own- all of “it”! Nothing existed like us and nothing exists like us right now. Three years in, we’ve made major strides by assisting Greater New Orleans’ food entrepreneurs with legal formalization, education, revenue generating pathways, kitchen access, changes in local permits, and much more. 💚Entrepreneurs collected over $100,000 in catering opportunities last year. 💚We provide pathways to New Orleans’ largest festivals through shared vending booths. 💚All of our courses to date are free. 💚We offer kitchen rental. 💚We offer collaborative catering opportunities and brunch markets. 💚 We serve starts ups to storefronts. 💚We offer co-working space. 💚 We support operations of food related events and spaces. 💚We partner with mission-aligned nonprofits. 💚We work to expand New Orleans food vending permits. 💚We operate one of the largest shared kitchens in New Orleans (includes a classroom, dry storage and three areas in the kitchen and walk-in cooler). This is just some of what we do. When I say we, I mean “I” as I am a team of 1. The term “we” is to speak into existence the opportunity to gain enough financial support to pay myself and hire staff this year. As they say, a closed mouth won’t get fed. This is my moment of transparency. Friends of Codey’s is currently self-funded enough to keep the lights on and needs support to keep going.
