This is a great visual for the question: how open is open AI? But it's just the tip of the iceberg. For companies seriously considering deploying Gen AI LLMs either for internal ops, business models or development tools, here are some key questions aside from access to source code that would required diligent investigation and assessment: ⚡ What license is provided regarding content used for training (including indemnification from lawsuits); ⚡ What safeguards are there for protection of user/end customer production data; ⚡ What obligations are there on redistribution of user improvements (modifications and enhancements); ⚡ What can and can't you do with the model output; ⚡ How is source defined and what will you not be given access to for testing, analysis or sharing for research and collaboration. What a great presentation from Tobie Langel sharing the current situation of software critical infrastructure maintenance today 👩🔧 🤔💭 I'd like to delve deeper into how the organization can help mitigate developer burnout. In my opinion, the role that individuals working in Open Source Program Offices (or similar initiatives) play in allocating the right resources and talented personnel within their organization is crucial 👉They streamline and guide the diverse flow of open source employee activity to effectively support maintainers with tasks such as coding, security infrastructure, project management, and funding, all through a strategic approach. IMHO, this shows a strong value proposition for both the organization and the open source community. However, I believe the issue nowadays is not about whether to set up an OSPO (or similar initiative) or not. The challenge lies in how to implement and integrate these various tasks in a way that makes sense for the organization's team's goals and values.

The time for change is now. The Sovereign Tech fund in Germany is showing that key users should also be providing some funds for maintaining #opensource . Shouldn't this be on the agenda for the next G20 summit? If each member contributed £10m pounds each year (a very small amount for any government), we would have another £200M to increase the security and resilience of software which will benefit 8Bn users. #g20summit #stateofopencon #funding #uk #ukgovernment
