Simply put: Interoperability saves lives. 🌍 Imagine a world where your health records are at your fingertips—secure, accessible, and shareable when needed most. Verifiable, person-mediated health records are not just a vision but a priority for WHO’s 194 Member States. These records must be machine-readable, cryptographically verifiable, and interoperable to improve care outcomes globally. 🚀 Building on Lessons from COVID-19 During the pandemic, digital infrastructure enabled verifiable test and vaccination credentials for millions worldwide. Yet, we learned that readiness before the next crisis—and solutions for everyday use—are equally essential. 🔑 The Global Digital Health Certification Network (GDHCN) In 2023, WHO launched the GDHCN, a public key infrastructure connecting 82 countries and nearly 2 billion people. This global trust network verifies digital health credentials like vaccination records without accessing individual data. With shared cryptographic keys, participating countries ensure credentials are secure and trusted worldwide. 🕋 Real-World Impact: Hajj Health Cards Last year, working with Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Oman, WHO's GDHCN enabled 250,000 pilgrims to carry verifiable health credentials to Hajj. Nearly 80% of them sought urgent care—a testament to the value of standardized, trusted systems at a global scale. 🌟 The Road Ahead Digital health infrastructure has the potential to revolutionize: 1️⃣ Digital “Yellow Cards” to assist travelers. 2️⃣ Cross-border insurance claims, minimizing fraud. 3️⃣ Workforce mobility for health professionals in emergencies. 4️⃣ Lifelong maternal and child health records for mobile families. Collaborations like the Open Wallet Forum are critical to ensure equity. We must ensure every person—not just those with the latest smartphone—has access to these life-changing tools. 💡 Let's commit to a future where health systems are digital, inclusive, and resilient. Sandboxes The concept of sandboxes is repeatedly referenced in the EU's Digital Strategy legal acts. Researchers at the University of Bayreuth, in cooperation with the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (LfDI) of Rhineland-Palatinate, are now laying the groundwork for digital experimentation environments. In these, companies and authorities can in future test the data protection compliance of their applications. To my knowledge, this is the first concrete implementation of the sandbox idea in Germany in the public sector. https://lnkd.in/eiC3Sqha

We need more #collective control of online #platforms! Platform #councils are the way forward to govern #BigTech according to principles we are well familiar with - called #democracy. 🙋 📚 Let's build on experience: examples like Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, OpenStreetMap and the #fediverse show how collective governance is possible (even if not always easy). Public-service broadcasters (#ÖRR) also rely on representative and inclusive councils (with room for improvement still). 🧬 Platform councils can go much deeper than regulation: They could decide on data access (more!), algorithms (e.g. using public-interest parameters like sustainability), user interfaces (no dark patterns) and the underlying business model (e.g. fewer ads). 💶 They should have a noticeable impact on the platforms' products and profitability. Current regulatory interventions, including #DMA, #DSA and competition law investigations, have not made much of a dent yet. We need them, too, but we need to go further.

🌍 Reflections on the "𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲" Seminar ☁️💡 A great discussion this week on the topic "Il #cloud alla prova della regolamentazione" seminar organized by I-Com, Institute for Competitiveness and Open Gate Italia. This closed-door event, held under Chatham House Rules, brought together key stakeholders to discuss the delicate balance between regulation and innovation in the cloud sector. Here are some of the reflections I took away from the event: ☁️ Cloud computing is a transformative force, enabling #AI, digital transformation, and economic growth across sectors. ⚖️ While regulation is essential for fairness and #security, we must ensure it doesn’t stifle #innovation or impose undue burdens—especially on #SMEs, which are vital to Europe's competitiveness. 📜 With existing regulations such as the Data Act, Digital Markets Act, GDPR and NIS2 and more already in place, any additional regulatory interventions must be EU-wide, flexible, and focused on protecting user interests while fostering competition and scalability. 💼 The path forward lies in collaboration—ensuring that policymakers, cloud providers, and businesses work together to craft a secure, innovation-driven digital future. This seminar underscored the tremendous potential of the cloud for Europe’s #digitaltransformation and the importance of ensuring that regulation fosters, rather than hinders, innovation. 📖 EuProGigant was prominently featured in the third edition of the Gaia-X Magazine! In light of the upcoming fourth edition of the Gaia-X Magazine, we want to show the great coverage of our ecosystem surrounding EuProGigant in the last version. 🏭 Implementing Gaia-X in the manufacturing industry The magazine outlined the origination of the EuProGigant project to keep the European manufacturing industry competitive. As a result, four more research projects were initiated which tackled different related challenges such as making supply chains more resistant, developing data-driven business models or establishing balanced edge cloud environments. This led to the creation of the ecosystem surrounding EuProGigant. 🤖 Deep-dive into data enhancement and future developments Data is full of opportunities for companies. Our ecosystem allows production companies to make the best use of their data by implementing Gaia-X principles. In combination with the Pontus-X network, we give manufacturing companies the tools control and monetize their data. Do you want to read more? The Global Digital Compact is one of the many processes related to the Internet that has the potential to create a long-lasting impact, and many stakeholders have expressed their views to advocate for a #GDC aligned with the principles of an open Internet with multistakeholder participation. ABRINT expressed its contribution in two distinct moments during #NETmundial: first, regarding the principles and second, concerning item 4.4 of the preliminary text. 1.In a bid to safeguard human dignity in the realm of internet governance, Abrint advocates for embracing these core principles: equality, non-discrimination, participation, inclusion, access to information, and sustainability. We stress the importance of viewing legitimacy through a democratic accountability lens to design platform-governance models capable of global acceptance and mitigating harm. Central to this new regulatory framework is the concept of a duty of care, guiding actions to fortify internet governance. Abrint suggests establishing baseline regulatory premises at both domestic and international levels, alongside asymmetric competition measures, to bolster the responsibility of all stakeholders in ensuring a safer online environment. We assert that regulation and governance must work hand in hand, forming an integrated approach. 2.In tackling the digital exclusion challenge, it's crucial to adopt a holistic and consistent approach, incorporating a risk-based perspective. Efforts to bridge the digital divide should prioritize achieving meaningful connectivity for all, ensuring that no individual or community is left behind. This involves exploring innovative solutions to deliver reliable and affordable last-mile networks and services, effectively reaching unserved and under-served populations.
