Social Housing providers continue to invest significantly in existing homes to tackle repair and maintenance issues, including damp and mould, building safety and improving energy efficiency. Providers made record investment in repair and maintenance spend in 2023, spending £7.7 billion over the year (20% more than in 2022). Heatwave impacts everyone, but for those working as informal laborers—domestic workers, waste pickers, construction workers, and street vendors—the impact is disproportionate and incredibly tough. Here’s how you can make a personal impact and support these essential workers in adapting to a changing climate. Free Access to Hydration: Hydration is crucial for anyone working in hot conditions. Providing free access to water/ORS/neembu-paani/Glucon-D can make a significant difference. Ensure that laborers have access to these resources throughout the day to help them stay hydrated and maintain their energy levels. Consider setting up water stations or distributing portable water bottles. Timing is Key: For domestic workers and others, scheduling work either early in the morning or later in the evening can help them avoid the peak heat of the day. This small adjustment can significantly improve their comfort and productivity. Support Local Vendors: Buying supplies from local vendors not only supports the community but also helps reduce the carbon footprint associated with transporting goods. Encourage people you interact with to buy locally, and make it a practice yourself. This support can boost local economies and reduce emissions. Provide Shade: For those working outdoors, such as street vendors and construction workers, having a shaded area be a lifesaver. If possible, set up a canopy or a shed where they can work and take breaks out of the sun. Segregate Waste: Help waste pickers by segregating your household waste into dry, wet, and sanitary categories. This simple action can make their job easier and quicker, reducing the time they have to spend sorting waste in the heat outside. Proper segregation also improves recycling efficiency and environmental sustainability. Provide Protective Gear: For construction workers and other laborers, providing protective gear such as hats, gloves, and sunglasses can help mitigate the effects of working in harsh conditions. This gear can protect them from direct sunlight, and reduce the risk of heatstroke, and improve safety. Spread the word about these practices. Educate your friends, family, and community members about the importance of providing hydration, buying locally, and offering shaded areas for workers.
