Excited after return from #NANOTECHJAPAN 2024 - serving existing and future customers’ needs #LUM GmbH, as a network partner, exhibited at the German joint stand at #Nanotech for the second time. This time the focus was on the newly developed, innovative LUMiSpoc and a new generation of the LUMiReader. In particular, the "SPOC", which for the first time enables a multidimensional characterization (size distribution, number and concentration) of nano- and sub-microscale individual particles and thus the classification of nanomaterials required by the EU, attracted great attention. Prof. Dr. Dr. Lerche: ”Together with our Japanese employee, we felt very comfortable at the German joint stand and enjoyed the good support. It should be mentioned that LUM Japan Co. Ltd. at the same time also exhibited at a group stand of the Japanese Center for Dispersion Processes and presented the latest results on the surface characterization of nanoparticles as well as the first results of the development of a certified particle concentration standard (together with Dr. Lerche KG) in the nanosize range in two lectures.” #Nanotech #NanotechJapan #Innovation #Nanotechnology #TokyoEvents #germanpavilion #ScienceAndTechnology #LUMGermany #LUMJapan #NetworkingOpportunity

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 '𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲' 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 Photonics has been designated by the European Commission as a "strategic core technology" and essential for Europe's competitiveness and future. The National Growth Fund has allocated 471 million euros to the photonics sector in the Netherlands. Of this, 89 million has been disbursed so far. The private sector has pledged another 630 million. Laurens Weers of the PhotonDelta foundation: "The investments in this industry are large, but so is the added value for the Netherlands. With technology, and certainly with deep tech, it is essential that you invest for the longer term." A promising development given the #medical applications of photonics. For example, consider point-of-care diagnostics using biosensor technology based on integrated photonics. Together with a consortium around the University of Twente, ChipTech Twente received 100 million euros earlier this year for innovation and the development of a photonic chip factory. ➡️ More about New Origin BV's plans and the photonics sector's promising future in Nieuwsuur (from 21:05): https://bit.ly/3T5IDA4 ➡️ More on Dutch investments in photonic chips: https://bit.ly/3uMb1ND Douwe Geuzebroek, Brilliance RGB | Martijn Heck, Eindhoven University of Technology | Guus Rijnders, MESA+ | Arne Leinse, LioniX International | Johan Feenstra, SMART Photonics

NEXT STEPS FOR THE ADVANCED MANUFACTURING ALLIANCE: HERE ARE THE TAKEAWAYS. Over 150 leaders and technology influencers met last week in Neuchatel, Switzerland, to discuss the need for a Global Advanced Manufacturing Alliance (Thanks especially to host Focuslight Switzerland for the warm welcome and driving the kickoff initiative.) Traditionally, well-established technologies like nanoimprint, direct laser writing, and selective laser etching have dominated the market. But now, new sustainable technologies like micro optics and metasurfaces are emerging as options for making smaller, smarter devices faster and cheaper. However, scaling these technologies into a profitable business means we need to remove some roadblocks, like metrology. If you cannot measure it, you cannot make it. Moreover, no one will buy it if you cannot measure it accurately! In Neuchatel, we confirmed that competing companies need agreed standards to grow the sector. And that starts by agreeing amongst micro optics manufacturers and then gradually understanding the changing needs of end users. Sounds simple. But it is not. It begins with deciding on what we really need to do together amongst trusted partners. Our meeting last week revealed the need for a MOU 2.0 (work has already started), a deepdive online meeting next January 14th 2025 (mark your agenda!) and an inspiring venue for the 2025 in-person gathering. And today I can reveal where that will be: the stunningly beautiful city of #Heidelberg,in the state of #Baden-Württemberg, southwestern Germany. Host Heidelberg Instruments have 40 years of experience in microfabrication, building laser Lithography Systems and Maskless Aligners for Advanced Micro- and Nanopatterning. With an installed base of over 1400 systems, they are an excellent host for this important Optica initiative. And the city of Heidelberg is an inspiring place to discuss and build what the market needs next. If your company has reasons to get involved, now would be a good time to reach out to us. My Optica colleague Olga Raz is explicitly looking for · photonics companies with innovative metrology solutions, · new materials with high refractive index · packaging technologies with low insertion losses · and solutions for automation in volume. Can you help? Plenty to think about over the holidays!

🤝 We keep introducing our team! Please, meet Europractice’s general manager Romano Hoofman, PhD, PMP from imec. Romano’s journey to the realm of microelectronics is hard to call typical. It is rather a series of fortunate coincidences that he compares to hopping from one train to another. 🚂🚂 🎓 He began his journey as a physical chemist at Wageningen University & Research, where his passion for spectroscopy inspired him to pursue a PhD in radiation chemistry at Delft University of Technology researching conducting polymers. During this time, Romano met quite some researchers from Philips, which sparked his interest in a new challenge and resulted in a position at Philips Research Leuven, then-future NXP Semiconductors, situated within imec’s facilities. In 2016, yet another train switch brought him to imec.IC-link and Europractice. 🚀 With Romano, the Europractice consortium has grown to include two new partners: Tyndall National Institute and Grenoble INP - UGA. Together, they added fabrication services of 12 new foundries to the Europractice portfolio, extending it with a variety of emerging technologies, such as compound semiconductors, flexible electronics, graphene, microfluidics, 3D system integration, and more. “I see our mission in supporting innovation in the broad sense of the word. As you can see from my journey, I am always open to try something new. And maybe to this I owe my desire to innovate. I like bringing people together, helping them grow, and extending existing initiatives to create a larger impact. Some may describe my approach as revolutionary, but I stand for evolution. We must change to remain relevant and lower the access barrier for our customers who, with their R&D activities, shape the future of the European semiconductor landscape,” concludes Romano. #Europractice #WeAreEuropractice #imecIClink #semiconductor #MPW
