Understanding and constructing traditional half-timbered buildings. 3️⃣ Hand Skills and Tools 🔨: Measuring and marking: Precision in using measuring tools and marking techniques. Cutting techniques: Mastery of hand saws, chisels, and planes for accurate cuts. 4️⃣ Machinery and Power Tools: Safe and efficient use of all necessary machinery including circular saws, table saws, band saws, planers, drilling and boring machine and nail and screw guns. 5️⃣ Materials and Processes: Knowledge of different wood types, their properties, and suitable applications. Understanding timber drying processes and their impact on material quality. Knowledge of wood preservation methods to protect against rot and pests. Understanding and applying insulation and air sealing techniques. 6️⃣ Blueprint interpretation: Ability to read and understand construction drawings and plans. 7️⃣ Building Regulations and Safety: Adherence to building codes and regulations. Latest safety practices and appropriate protective equipment. 8️⃣ Conceptualising and Sketching: Creating initial designs through freehand or digital design software. We attended an event last week, where one of the presenters was bemoaning the fact regarding the lack of provision in Yorkshire for scaffolding training. Fortunately, we were able to help her due to our provision of a scaffolding pre-apprenticeship programme. Discussions are moving forward. Historic Trades Training Ramps Up to Meet Growing Demand. As the inventory of existing buildings continues to grow in the U.S., leaders in the historic preservation community are sounding the alarm that the construction industry is in dire need of workers with historic trades training. Recent studies suggest that thousands of trade people with training in historic trades—such as masons, plasterers and carpenters—will need to enter the workforce each year to keep up with demand. In response, advocates are pushing to expand training opportunities and create registered apprenticeships in the historic trades that are recognized nationwide. PATH TO THE TRADES - Becoming a carpenter. What a carpenter does: Carpenters do everything from framing houses to skyscrapers, hospitals, apartments, and more! Some carpenters choose to go into building custom furniture, cabinets, or fine millwork in buildings. It really depends on what you find you enjoy the most. Pathways: Apprenticeship: 2-year programs combine on-the-job training with classroom learning. Trade school: Certificate programs focus on specific woodworking and building skills. On-the-job training: Lots of construction companies or wood shops will offer training programs for entry-level positions where you can eventually work your way up at the company. Winter is here, and for construction apprentices, gearing up for the cold is not just about comfort—it's about resilience and productivity. As we navigate the winter construction season, let's emphasize the importance of wearing warm layers from companies like Carhartt. Starting out in construction during the colder months can be tough, especially for new apprentices. Having the right winter gear isn't just about workplace comfort, it's about getting the job done when you need to no matter the conditions. Dressing in layers is key, and it needs to be to durable, reliable gear. You need jackets, overalls, and pants that are designed to withstand the elements, providing insulation and protection for you the apprentice. Buy a solid jacket, overalls, and pants designed to shield against cold winds and precipitation. Add outerwear like the Insulated Duck Jackets or Storm Defenders along with a moisture-wicking base layers to keep sweat away from the skin and keeping you warm. Make sure you have a solid pair of insulated work gloves that keep you warm but also hold up to the pressure of working with timber, metal, and cement. Finally wear a hat that keeps your head and your ears warm. Keep your feet warm and dry with a good pair boots that provide good insulation from the elements and protect your feet and pair them with warm socks. It's not just about staying warm for Apprentices. If you are well-equipped with warm, solid cold-weather gear you are more likely to stay focused, maintain productivity, and deliver high-quality work and stay out of the trailer. You show the company that you can work in any conditions and get the job done!
