SALT architects PTY Ltd were crowned inaugural winners of the Coverland Roof Tile Award of Excellence at the Corobrik (Pty) LtdSouth African Institute of Architects Awards for Excellence and for Merit in partnership with Coverland. Fresh from his prize-winning trip to the World Architecture Festival in Singapore last week, Gustav Roberts of SALT Architects gave us a summary of his experience:
“The trip to the World Architecture Festival in Singapore was remarkable. Experiencing such a progressive city first-hand—one that functions almost like a precisely designed machine—showcased an ideal of “pragmatic utopia” that the developed world seems to be striving toward.
Singapore’s vision of becoming a “City in a Garden” is an inspiring priority, and the extensive greenery everywhere contributes to a magical urban experience. The city’s openness, with few barriers or boundaries like fences, allows residents and visitors alike the freedom to explore seamlessly across properties. This intentional design seems certain to help foster a strong sense of ownership and belonging among residents.
At the festival itself, it was inspiring to witness incredible architectural work presented by people from all backgrounds and parts of the world. The projects ranged in scale from small pavilions to entire cities, reminding us that these achievements come from regular people with the same challenges and humanity as we have in South Africa.
One notable topic was the concept of “Sponge Cities”—urban areas designed to absorb and manage water more effectively. It sparked reflections on how these principles might influence the development of Cape Town, an official Wetland City. This concept could be highly relevant to our unique urban landscape and climate.
A recurring thought was how successful architecture starts with a zoomed-out view, ensuring that it is good urbanism first. Our challenge in South Africa, however, is how to achieve this vision within a context where safety and security remain top priorities.
Thanks again to Coverland and SAIA for the landmark opportunity.”

Athens Architecture Guide by Designboom and Archdaily
Athens stands as a city where the legacy of Antiquity is woven into its modern and vibrant urban landscape
At the recent Design & Architecture Summit by PRAGMATIKA.MEDIA and Ukrainian Design and Innovation Week at UNIT.City, ZIKZAK Architects' CEO Alesia Karnaukhova joined as a speaker for an expert discussion.
During the "Ergonomics and Adaptability in Design" panel, Alesia emphasized the importance of creating urban spaces that meet the needs of all population groups.
"Accessible public spaces should satisfy all five of our senses and be comfortable for everyone. Business creates aesthetics and comfort, having the resources to do so. Ideally, architectural studios should represent community interests - that's how we can create harmonious spaces," Alesia noted.

Gaia, a landmark project at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, has earned global recognition for its innovative and sustainable design. The building was awarded the Grand Prize (Campuses) at the prestigious Prix Versailles 2024, an annual UNESCO award celebrating outstanding architecture that enhances and beautifies the living environment. This accolade underscores Gaia’s significance as a model for sustainable campus architecture. Alongside this achievement, Changi Airport Terminal 2, another project by RSP Architects Planners & Engineers, received the Special Prize for an Interior (Airports) at the same awards.
Designed by RSP Architects Planners & Engineers in collaboration with Toyo Ito & Associates, Gaia stands as Asia’s largest mass-engineered timber (MET) building, combining architectural excellence with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. It not only sets a new standard for educational facilities but also highlights the growing potential of timber as a sustainable material in large-scale construction.
