A researcher working on behalf of a Canadian not for profit interviewed me this morning to talk about #aiskills and the entire framing of the study was centered on technical skills and technical jobs. The final report will be used to help young people decide what credentials to pursue to work in #ai. I shared with them what Mia Shah-Dand and Women in AI Ethics™ note in this work - we MUST embrace multidisciplinary approaches. I am honored to announce a new role I am taking on at Operation HOPE: Managing Director of our Artificial Intelligence Ethics Council (AI Ethics Council; website: https://lnkd.in/eaMT8fT4). Announced at our December 2023 HOPE Global Forums by AI Ethics Council co-chairs John Hope Bryant (Founder, Chair, CEO - Operation HOPE) and Sam Altman (Co-Founder and CEO - OpenAI) (video: https://lnkd.in/ekrm89jY), we held our inaugural council meeting on June 28, 2024, at Operation HOPE's headquarters in Atlanta (July 1, 2024 press release: https://lnkd.in/eeatWsgp). In addition to co-chairs Bryant and Altman, initial council members include Chairman of The Andrew J. Young Foundation, former U.N. Ambassador, former Mayor of Atlanta and civil rights icon, Ambassador Andrew J. Young; Clark Atlanta University President and Chair of Presidents, #UnitedNegroCollegeFund, George T. French, Jr.; Spelman College President, Helene D. Gayle; The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (The King Center) CEO, Bernice A. King; Morehouse College President, David A. Thomas; and United Way President and CEO, Angela Williams. We will add additional members representing technology, community, and other important sectors in the coming months. As noted in the press release, "The AI Ethics Council is an interdisciplinary body of diverse experts designed to become a leading authority in identifying, advising on, and addressing ethical issues related to artificial intelligence and its impact on underserved and historically excluded communities.” To quote co-chair Bryant from the press release: "As a council, we will aim to focus our attention on the needle we can help move: expanding inclusive opportunity around our shared future, for everyone, as it relates to AI." #FinancialLiteracy and #Housing / #Mortgage / #ConsumerFinance remain passions of mine and I will always stay connected to those worlds (including through Financial Literacy For All and the Milken Institute). However, I can think of no more compelling issue with greater implications for future human and societal interaction as the ethical, responsible development of AI. I think all are aware of how #AI not "can" but "will" change life as we know it for better or for worse, in ways we have never before experienced. It is crucial that we evolve AI in the right way, lifting everyone up and leaving no one behind. We have seen what happens when we fail to do this, and we cannot - must not - let that happen here and now.
