Looking forward to watching this documentary! ‘Unsurprisingly, the year dual cassette decks became available, 1982, marked a low point in sales for the music industry. The subsequent creation of digitized CD technology not only gave the industry the lifeline it needed, but it soared their profits to unimaginable new heights. Two factors played into that: the companies’ ability to persuade fans to buy their entire collections again in the new format, and the sky-high prices they set for CDs, which often cost twice as much as vinyl releases or cassettes. Making the companies even richer was the profit margins on the new discs. A CD that sold for $15 cost less than $2 to manufacture. More, the companies kept raising prices on the discs through the 90s. Such extreme greed seeded a level of resentment among fans that came back to bite them big-time with the advent of file-sharing. “Most kids think of the record industry as the Capitol building filled with guys with cigars sitting at their desks,” said Stapleton. “You don’t think about the assistants and receptionists and all the people at the bottom who would lose their jobs in layoffs because of practices like this.”’ - via The Guardian (https://lnkd.in/ezexptJJ) #musicindustry #musicbusiness

Combat State Music Flow Here's a quick music tech walkthrough for setting up a combat state music flow, based on work I've done in the past. This covers how to transition between Exploration, Enemy Proximity, Anticipation, and Combat music. These kinds of music flows are fairly comon in many RPGs these days. https://lnkd.in/gSJ7_mx7

New Post: Sphere Entertainment Shares Soar on Positive Quarterly Results, Besting All Music Stocks - https://lnkd.in/gk_knEab - Sphere Entertainment Co. shares spiked 22.3% this week after the company’s fiscal fourth-quarter earnings on Wednesday (Aug. 14) showed that the Las Vegas venue brought in $151 million in the quarter and $489 million in its first three full quarters of operation. Total revenue of $273 million — a figure that includes MSG Networks — was in line with analyst estimates while earnings per share beat estimates. During Wednesday’s earnings call, CEO James Dolan said the company is learning how to get the most out of the $2.3 billion venue with not just concerts but corporate and sporting events and Sphere’s current cash cow, motion pictures. “Our plan for Sphere is to create widespread demand for our offerings and drive utilization far in excess of traditional venues,” Dolan said. Related Music Companies Are Running Into Wall Street’s High Expectations 08/16/2024 After hosting residencies by U2, Phish and Dead & Company, Sphere will begin a string of concerts by the Eagles from September to November and will host its first EDM events in December with Italian producer Anyma. Dolan didn’t provide specifics about additional residencies but said to expect an artist in “the country category” in 2025. LiveOne’s shares rose 16.3% this week after the Los Angeles-based music streamer announced its fiscal first-quarter earnings on Tuesday (Aug. 13). A 29% increase in paid members, to 653,000, helped revenue improve 19% to $33.1 million from $27.8 million in the year-ago period. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization jumped 31% to $2.9 million. The 20-company Billboard Global Music Index (BGMI) fell 0.7% to 1,780.54 despite most of the stocks gaining and the market enjoying one of its best weeks of 2024 thanks to a host of positive news. Driven by stronger-than-expected retail sales data on Thursday (Aug. 15) and encouraging inflation news earlier in the week, the tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 5.3% to 17,631.72 and the S&P 500 finished its best week of the year, gaining 3.9% to 5,524.25. The BGMI’s largest companies fell in the middle of the pack. Live Nation shares were up 3.2% to $95.18 and Universal Music Group rose 0.9% to 22.35 euros ($24.66). Among the losers were Warner Music Group, down 0.4% to $28.22, and Spotify, down 0.7% to $337.38. Stock gains were seen globally. In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 rose 1.8% to 8,311.41. South Korea’s KOSPI composite index jumped 4.2% to 2,697.20. China’s Shanghai Composit

It's hard not to talk about the undeniable impact of the Super Bowl halftime show on artists' careers. Usher's Super Bowl halftime show generated a staggering 46% surge in streams, translating to 35.9 million U.S. streams in just two days following his performance. Additionally, his music sales skyrocketed by 210%, demonstrating the unparalleled exposure and commercial boost such a platform provides. I'm sure we'll get more data soon about an influx in ticket sales for his tour in the coming months, as his tour is more than halfway sold out already. This demonstrates that strategic visibility on the world's biggest stage can dramatically amplify your brand, reach, and revenue. https://lnkd.in/eNrj8x-z #superbowl #usher #musicindustry

Sidestepping the copyright minefield and impact on production jobs for a hot minute, this is a good way to wrap your head around the creative possibilities tools like #Sora will offer. The opportunity for diverse voices to tell stories in a high fidelity way; the democratisation of expensive (expansive) production processes…imagine a world in which anyone - young people, indigenous folk, marginalised communities - can create Hollywood* standard movies from their homes. As Paul Trillo says “This was an idea I had almost 10 years ago but was too ambitious to ever make. Finally was able bring it to life now…” This is such an exciting moment for storytelling. *this is only the first release of the tech; in 12 months time I guarantee the outputs will be indistinguishable from studio film.
A trip and a fall down memory lane. First official commissioned music video made with OpenAI Sora for Washed Out (commissioned by SUBPOP) This also marks my 20th (! 👴 !) Vimeo Staff Pick. Watch here: https://lnkd.in/gzycDnR3 This was an idea I had almost 10 years ago but traveling through the decades in one continuous shot always felt too ambitious on a music video budget so I never bother to pitch it. After shelving the idea I was able to bring it to life now, leaning into Sora's dream logic to explore memories that never existed. I leaned into the hallucinations, the strange details, the dream-like logic of movement, the distorted mirror of memories, and the surreal qualities unique to Sora / AI that differentiate it from reality. Embrace the strange. Recreating reality 1 for 1 is boring. Shout out Chad Nelson and Souki Mansoor for supporting this and helping make it happen!!
