Time for another round of coffee. I was driving back to Oakland when I noticed this outlet at Live Oak, CA. I decided to wave the construction team flag and say hello to the troops. Temperature was a bracing 102F, but the line was still a long one. People were walking up to the window and placing orders as well. Full marks to the Operations team for serving customers quickly and with a smile. Love the synergy between real estate development, construction,and operations which enables delivery of a complete product. The crew had no time to chat. Car distribution group NVD has plans to build huge logistics hub in South Dublin 🚗🚙🚘 National Vehicle Distribution (NVD), a company that transports new and used cars to garages, is looking to build a huge logistics hub at one of its facilities in south Dublin. NVD Trading submitted plans to change the use of lands near one of its vehicle distribution centres in Baldonnel from a car park to a logistics warehouse campus. The proposed development includes four new logistics/warehouse units with a combined gross floor area of over 20,000 sq m. Each of the warehouses would include office and staff facilities. Using construction consultant Scollard Doyle’s estimates, developing a logistics warehousing hub of that size could cost around €20m. What I Learned Running a Home Service Business (and How It Can Help Others) When I ran my landscaping, hardscaping, and irrigation business, I learned some tough lessons—ones that ultimately propelled my business forward. Here are a few of the biggest: 1. Hire for Values and Vision: It’s tempting to prioritize experience, but I found it was far better to hire people who shared my values and bought into my vision. Skills can be taught, but alignment ensures adherence to your standards, saving time and frustration in the long run. 2. Use Checklists Everywhere: Checklists became indispensable—vehicle load-outs, equipment maintenance, tools required for each job, and material delivery instructions. They eliminated excuses, reduced errors, and saved time. 3. Optimize Routing: For recurring jobs and bigger projects, efficient routing was a game-changer. Early on, I used Google Maps to create logical routes that saved fuel, time, and reduced crew frustration. Later, I invested in software, but even basic tools made a difference. 4. Never Pause Your Sales Funnel: Twice, I paused sales because I felt overwhelmed with work. Both times, it caused a lag that hurt profitability. Keeping the sales funnel active while figuring out how to handle the workload was the better path forward. 5. Hold Your Team Accountable: Hire, promote, and terminate based on your values. Clarity and consistency here are key. It’s better to be short-staffed with aligned team members than to struggle with a full crew making avoidable mistakes. The Big Lesson: When I worked alongside my crews in the field, I lost strategic momentum. But when I committed to staying in a leadership role—solving problems, creating systems, and fostering accountability—my team and business grew exponentially. I’ve developed a program to help solve these issues, but before I roll it out, I want to ensure it addresses all the pain points owners like you are facing. Quizzing Gavin on the best career lesson he has received, he reflected back to his first career as a chef in Melbourne saying “mise en place” (French pronunciation: [mi zɑ̃ ˈplas]). A culinary phrase often used in professional kitchens meaning "putting in place" or "gather" and refers to the setup and organisation of ingredients required before cooking.
