#AAO2023: Topical trehalose can stabilize eyes with keratoconus (KC) that have low progression risk, according to research presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology 2023 Meeting, held in San Francisco from November 3 to November 6. Polarization sensitive-optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) assessment of individuals treated with the topical agent showed improved collagen orientation, revealing its effect on the extracellular matrix metabolism, according to the report. Presenting study author, Arya H Wakankar, MS, and colleagues, sought to characterize the application of trehalose, an autophagy activator, in managing patients with keratoconus. Most of the neuropeptides have been discovered more than 30 years ago and the presence and distribution of some of them has been explored in the eye in the 80´s mainly by Richard Stone. This concerns particularly substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and neuropeptide Y (NPY).
