In the coming year, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has ambitious plans to further strengthen the future of corporate climate action. 🔑Key initiatives for 2024 include: •A review of the Corporate Net-Zero Standard •Developing the Financial Institutions Net-Zero Standard, enabling the financial sector to set the first science-aligned net-zero targets. •Working on sector-specific standards for six impactful sectors - oil and gas, electric utilities, automotives, chemicals, insurance, and apparel. •Piloting a hybrid model for developing sector-specific standards. By collaborating with external organizations and pooling expertise, this approach could revolutionize how the SBTi’s standards for science-based climate action are created, accelerating the development of sector-specific benchmarks in 2025 and beyond. 🚨 Big News in #CarbonRemoval 🚨 The Science Based Targets initiative (#SBTi) just made a major update that could reshape the path to #NetZero. The latest revision to the Corporate Net-Zero Standard opens the door for corporates to use carbon removals in their neutralisation claims. This marks a significant shift from earlier this year, when the use of removals was still a big question mark. What changed? 🤔 ✅ The SBTi has removed "neutralization milestones" from its list of exclusions, officially bringing #CDR (Carbon Dioxide Removal) into the conversation. ✅ Two CDR workshops are already in the works in NY and London, aimed at informing future research. ✅ This could lead to stronger intermediate targets and a huge boost in demand for carbon removals in the voluntary carbon market. Science Based Targets initiative today issued its technical publications in an early step in the Corporate #NetZero Standard review. There is a lot to read through. If you do need some help clarifying the themes, do of course get in touch! There are some new ideas, but much of the content is reaffirming previous thoughts. Following today’s announcement, a draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard will be released for public consultation towards the end of Q4 2024. This is a consultation therefore feedback is requested. Final guidance, unfortunately, won’t be available until 2025. Alberto Carrillo Pineda, Chief Technical Officer, SBTi said: “The outputs released today are a critical step in understanding how the #SBTi can develop a more sophisticated approach to scope 3 to help more businesses set targets. The SBTi believes that direct #decarbonization must remain the priority for corporate #ClimateAction and looks forward to the extensive public consultation on the draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard.” #ESG

Science Based Targets initiative Recently, SBTi released several outputs in its review of the Corporate Net-Zero Standard, including a discussion paper exploring scenarios on how EACs, including carbon credits, may be used in science-based target-setting contexts related to #Scope3 emissions. The three scenarios it outlines related to carbon credits do #not include offsetting emissions - a situation in which companies buy credits instead of reducing emissions within their value chains to make claims against set targets.
