As we start the new year remember the importance of going to Gemba and seeing for yourself how the work is being done. "Genchi Genbutsu" advocates three key principles: go to the source (Genchi), see for yourself (Genbutsu), and collect relevant data (Genjitsu). These principles stress the importance of direct engagement, observation, and data collection at the actual location to gain firsthand insights and make informed decisions. Aligned with this, "Gemba," or the real place of work, serves as the focal point for applying these principles. Going to Gemba is not only about being physically present, but also about interacting with the people and learning through experience from those doing the work.

In this week's newsletter, we go deeper into our modified GIST framework to look at how it can help align activities and actions to goals and outcomes-- 🏆 Goals: the vision, outcome, or achievement you’re striving for, the thing you most care about or are passionate about, or it’s the thing(s) you want to accomplish ⚡ Ideas: the ideas you have on how you might achieve your goal(s) 🔬 Steps: incremental tests or questions you need to complete to test your ideas 📝 Tasks: things that need to be achieved in order to accomplish the Steps GIST was created by Itamar Gilad for product managers. We've modified it to be used for: ▶ Individual Guidance: Organize and align all of your activities (work and home) with your overall purpose in life. ▶ Company or Organizational Leadership: Establish goals for your company or organization, and then align and organize your activities to support them. ▶ Team Management: Manage the goals of your team and ensure your activities are in pursuit of these outcomes (whether you chose them or not). If your goal is to declare a goal and then expect it to just happen, this framework is not for you. Critical thinking and problem solving skills are important in our daily activities. As a salesperson, one is faced with various problems that may or may not be in your power to solve, a good way to determine the solution to any problem is to ask questions- questions clarify the pain point. After asking all the questions, you could brainstorm for ideas and solutions to the problems, then eliminate irrelevant options from ideas that have been brainstormed. Finally, when implementing solutions, it is important to have an action plan. Having an action plan helps to ensure you can follow up on the how well the solution has been implemented, this provides room for improvement.
