Most of the enterprises today are now data driven and for that to happen they start with building a data strategy first. Depending on the business processes or the organizations - they either go with building Data Warehouses, Data Lakehouse, or Data Lakes. Finally, a Data Platform is built and most preferably on public clouds to leverage the scale, performance, and ease of use which cloud provides. Let us first understand; what all stages are there in this data platform journey to create trusted data products. Data from the origin or source must undergo multiple stages and we can simply draw out a workflow with 4 key steps - 1. Ingest or Capture 2. Storage 3. Analyze or Process 4. Consume But there is one cross cutting concerns which always brings a lot of attention and is one of the much talked about focus areas to successfully run the Data Platform and this happens to be implementing security on public clouds. Suppose we wanted to do this on Google Cloud Platform and bring the security posture right in Cloud way then how can we do that. Here is one simple strategy to do by understanding first the different key pillars where we need to have proper security controls - 1. Think first about how you can safeguard your entire infrastructure or the cloud resources. 2. Next comes securing your most precious element which is data itself. 3. Finally consider putting a security fence within the periphery of the cloud resources itself. On a high level of proximity for GCP services and thier level of support, there are multiple controls which we can use in Google Cloud to do this - 1. One can think of Cloud IAM - Who can access What to just secure the infrastructure part. 2. Next is Data Security - We can have encryption mechanisms to deal with this and they come in various flavours - Google Managed Encryption, Customer Managed Encryption and Customer Supplied Encryption 3.
