💡 #DidYouKnow Agrivoltaics, or agrivoltaic energy, is the ability to utilize land to both generate energy from solar panels and maintain agricultural and animal production 🧑🌾 🧠 This idea was conceived in 1981 by Germans Armin Zastrow and Adolf Goetzberger, the founder of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE. It wasn't until ten years later that the concept of agrivoltaics gained popularity thanks to French researcher Christophe Dupraz. ☀️ An agrivoltaic structure involves the cohabitation of solar panels and cultivation spaces. The solar panels are mounted at a sufficient height to allow access to the soil, and they are also adjustable: their orientation can be adapted based on weather conditions and the needs of the crops, considering their growth phases. Our partner, JCM Power, has embraced this ingenious system and aims to integrate it into its operations 🌿

New from EPRI's #TechnologyInnovation team! Our latest research delves into the intricate interplay between #climatechange, agriculture, and energy, illuminating vital insights into the energy-food nexus. The agriculture sector, crucial for global food security, heavily relies on #energy for essential processes like irrigation and harvesting. As climate change challenges traditional farming practices, our research underscores the urgent need for adaptive strategies to bolster resilience. One such strategy is Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), enabling year-round crop production under optimized conditions, reducing reliance on unpredictable weather and soil quality. We also explore agrivoltaics, integrating solar energy generation with agricultural activities, offering innovative paths toward #sustainability. Our study advocates for a shift towards renewable energy sources and advanced farming techniques to safeguard long-term food security. The research also proposes interventions across the agricultural value chain to mitigate climate change impacts and foster a resilient food system. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e_M7iCEX.

🌿☀️ Agrivoltaics: The Future of Solar and Agriculture 🌾🔌 I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Dan French, founder of the Solar Farm Summit, the leading agrivoltaics conference in the U.S. Dan shared his insights on the exciting potential of combining solar power generation with agriculture, and how this innovative approach can benefit both industries and the environment. Agrivoltaics can be divided into three main categories: crops grown under solar panels, livestock grazing around solar installations, and the conservation of native species and pollinator habitats (crops, critters and conservation!). While still in its early stages in the U.S., agrivoltaics has already shown promising results, such as increased yields for shade-tolerant crops and reduced water usage. The Solar Farm Summit, taking place July 8-10, 2024 in Chicago, aims to bring together professionals from the solar industry, agriculture, policy, and research to collaborate and advance agrivoltaics. With strong USDA presence and bipartisan support in the U.S. Senate, the future looks bright for this emerging field. Agrivoltaics not only helps mitigate the impact of climate change on agriculture but also provides additional revenue streams for farmers and rural communities. As the demand for clean energy grows and traditional agriculture faces challenges, agrivoltaics offers a way to create synergies between these two vital industries. If you're interested in learning more about agrivoltaics and connecting with like-minded professionals, I highly recommend attending the Solar Farm Summit. Farmers and ranchers can even attend for free! Let's work together to build a more sustainable future for both energy and agriculture. 🔗 For more information, visit: solarfarmsummit.com #agrivoltaics #solarenergy #sustainableagriculture #cleanenergy #solarfarmsummit #sustainability #innovation #collaboration

EOR will be exhibiting at the 2024 Solar Farm Summit, North America's Agrivoltaics Expo, from July 8-10. Visit booth C2 in the Cassatt Ballroom to talk with Joe Pallardy, Hallie Brychel, and Kevin Griggs. The Solar Farm Summit is sponsored by American Farmland Trust and explores exciting intersection of solar energy, agriculture and land stewardship: 🐑 Dual Use—pairing solar power development and agricultural production, or agrivoltaics, to which this dual-use development forum is dedicated. 🌎 Land Use—understanding solar's energy impacts on soils, surface water, groundwater and habitat, and ways to seize the multipurpose potential of integrating solar power development into symbiotic agricultural and/or ecological systems. ☀ Ecosystem Services—combining solar development, conservation and best agricultural practices to harness the land's true multi-functional potential and unlock new values beyond megawatts, maximum employment & marginal tax revenues. #agrivoltaics #solar #ecosystemservices #environmentalmarkets

We can do it. We are. And if you count ecosystem services created along the way, we're more than doubling the harvest because dual-use development nets benefits and functions difficult or impossible to get built any other way. If you have doubts, I highly recommend you dive into the research index on the SFS website with an aggregation of primary materials and info from across the planet and links to key organizations leading this renaissance. And, better still, be at the show and see for yourself. Agrivoltaics is simple, harnessing the shade works, and it's about to level up humanity's land use game in revolutionary ways. Agriculture most of all. The future's as bright as we build it y'all. Just questions of when, how, and who will benefit.
When the Solar Farm Summit returns to Chicago this summer for a supercharged 2nd edition of North America’s Agrivoltaics Expo July 8-10 (SFS24), it will be anchoring a robust calendar of dual-use development events, programming, and potentially game-changing policy in store for 2024! After many years of hard work by eager researchers and early adopters, and recent years of rapidly growing global momentum, is this the year agrivoltaics breaks into mainstream practice in America? Could this be the Year of Agrivoltaics? Read our complete forward look at the action and calendar items on deck for 2024 on the SFS blog >> https://lnkd.in/g5cYZpfj #agriculture #energy #agrivoltaics #farm #solar #solarfarm
