Core sample velocity testing 🔬 H2EX Geologist Jeff Poole visited the Core Library recently. This work complements the 3D Ambient Noise Tomography surveys completed with Fleet Space Technologies in Dec-2023. Jeff’s analysis assists with matching historical core drilling samples to the velocity models developed by Fleet. This will help H2EX define possible drilling targets. PGS’ novel acquisition configuration is the new standard. PGS had a very busy 3D seismic acquisition season offshore Norway last year. Our Ramform fleet deployed the same state-of-the-art streamer and source geometry on three exploration surveys: A 14 x 75 m x 7000 m deep-tow multisensor GeoStreamer spread with two long streamer-tails in combination with a wide-tow triple source. Over 15 000 sq. km of high-quality 3D seismic data were acquired. And more data will be acquired using this same configuration this year. This long tail, wide tow source acquisition configuration is better by design. The variable streamer-lengths support longer offsets for full waveform inversion (FWI) velocity model building. Multi-sources provide improved spatial sampling. Wide-tow multi-sources deliver improved near offset coverage for optimal subsurface imaging and/or increased acquisition efficiency. The title of this presentation at #GOMCON2024 looks complex, but it is just on how to reassess Gulf of Mexico offshore areas that have been greatly investigated for sediment sources, and then reuse the data to reassess more areas. The proposed concept applies to the Florida Panhandle that consist of an area that has a unique depositional model and was tested with thousands of miles of geophysical data and hundreds of cores. An offshore sediment availability classification based on the existing cores was developed by USACE. We are proposing an approach that can help us to extend the classified sediment source areas by extrapolating the existing data and identify new areas for coring or reclassify existing areas. I am honored that my collaborators with this proposed approach for sediment sources reassessment are two great geo scientists: Sarah Lindeman (Coastal Geologist FL-DEP) and Jennifer Steel, Ph.D. (Coastal Geologist BOEM-Marine Minerals Program).
