It is time for a significant shift in how we are addressing #sextrafficking. We can't keep putting band-aids on this gaping wound. Few are willing to directly challenge the individuals, systems, and institutions that enable sexual exploitation to continue, but this is what is needed! We cannot seek to just alleviate the pain of the exploited. We must work to prevent that pain from occurring in the first place. As part of our prevention work, we conduct research on the public’s awareness and familiarity with sex trafficking in Canada. Our research shows that there’s a critical window of time to talk with your child about sex trafficking before their risk factors increase. Awareness, education and dialogue are essential to help keep young people safe, because if you know what sex trafficking is, how it happens and can spot the warning signs, you can take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones. That’s why we’ve created this new campaign with support from survivors that includes videos, information and resources about this issue and what caregivers can do to protect their children. “Survivors are the only experts of their lives.” A panel is the first closing presentation of the JuST Conference and is addressing ways to do collaboration instead of compliance when working with youth survivors of sex trafficking. The panel is presenting ways to identify the difference between compliance and collaboration, better practices for and how to invite collaboration, and cultural considerations for collaboration. It’s important to see the reality of sex trafficking in America, and this month, we will repost direct service partners who are sharing this important information. However, one of our values at The Jensen Project is “Creating Joy.” We will be using our platform to showcase the wins of our movement. There are so many people who care about the suffering of others. There are people who are helping by holding space for survivors, by trusting them to know what’s best for their futures.
