How do we design for planetary health in a world of complexity? 🌏 This diagram has been a cornerstone of inspiration for myself and all the work that we do over at CoLabs Australia, The Phoenix School Program, and deeply informs our vision for a distributed network of bioregional hubs that are attuned to place. Given that our work is a systems play, it’s not just about the output of innovation, it’s about taking a transdisciplinary approach that connects its inputs – education, research, and practice – to empower place-based circular, regenerative bio-economies. By embracing complexity-informed living systems thinking perspective and a wide-boundary circumference of care, we’re attempting to reimagine how to realign human ingenuity with the wisdom and resilience of natural systems. Ultimately, our goal is to inspire, support and encourage more folks to design for planetary health – not in isolation, but through collaboration, cooperation, coordination and consilience across and between disciplines and at multiple interlinking scales. The question we keep asking is: How might we help facilitate the transition towards a more equitable, regenerative, circular future that honours the uniqueness of place and the interconnectedness of life? As we step into the new year, I had like to share a little about myself and my journey. I am currently pursuing an MPhil in Architectural and Urban Studies, with a focus on neuroarchitecture. I often get asked, "What is neuroarchitecture?" and how it aligns with architecture and neuroscience. The truth is, they go hand in hand. We spend 90% of our time in enclosed environments shaped by architecture. So, what more can we do than design spaces that positively influence our minds and bodies? Recently, I had a thought-provoking conversation with a friend who remarked that despite the growing efforts toward sustainability, it still feels out of reach. At that moment, my response was simple: "If we want to achieve sustainability, the way forward is through people." The spaces we inhabit have the power to shape us. If the environments where we spend most of our time can support our brains, bodies, and mental well-being, then subconsciously, people will start making better choices for themselves and their communities. Sustainability is not just about policies or green technologies—it’s about creating environments that inspire people to live better, healthier, and more sustainable lives. Neuroarchitecture is a pathway toward that vision, and I’m excited to explore how design can contribute to a more sustainable and human-centered future. 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀: Dr. Alejandro de Castro Mazarro is a postdoctoral researcher at the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) in Dresden. His current research describes the impact of urbanisation in the landscapes where construction materials are extracted, and explores design and governance scenarios that may enable a just transition towards urban sustainability. Dr. Lenneke Kuijer is assistant professor in the Industrial Design Department of the Eindhoven University of Technology. Her research focuses on relations between interaction design and the resource intensity of everyday life. In her work she draws on critical research in science and technology studies, which she translates to actionable design tools through case studies.   Dr. Corelia Baibarac Duignan is Assistant Professor at the University of Twente (Knowledge, Transformation and Society) and co-founder of the Rurban Futures Collective. Originally trained as an architect, she is a transdisciplinary researcher and educator working at the intersection between sustainable futures, commons, and creative approaches to civic engagement for inclusive transformations. Expanding on the successes of the 2023-24 edition of our Postgraduate Certificate Building Beyond Borders, this symposium aims to reflect on how regenerative architecture can foster sustainable practices, social inclusivity, and responsible use of resources. The beauty of architecture manifests itself in different ways. Energy and its potential on an architectural and urban scale is one of them. In Mexico, having a database on building energy consumption is a crucial step in identifying areas for improvement and developing low-tech retrofit strategies that can generate significant long-term savings.
