Leveraging Strategic Partnerships for Philanthropic Impact: Insights from My Time at Goodwill Industries NY & NJ Day Services During my tenure at Goodwill Industries NY & NJ Day Services, our commitment to driving impactful initiatives that fostered community engagement and created opportunities for individuals in need was unwavering. Reflecting on our collective efforts, I’m eager to share some key insights and lessons learned: Forging Strategic Partnerships: One of the cornerstones of our success at Goodwill NY & NJ Day Services was our ability to forge impactful partnerships. Through collaborative efforts, we secured collaborations resulting in a remarkable increase in job placements annually. Noteworthy collaborations with major corporations led to innovative business strategies and growth in programs year over year. These partnerships exemplify the potential for collaboration between the philanthropic sector and corporate entities to drive meaningful impact. Empowering Through Program Development: A highlight of our tenure was co-leading the development of the Career Pathways in Retail Training program in partnership with the Fashion Institute of Technology. This initiative empowered participants with job readiness skills and resulted in successful program completions. The success of this program underscores the importance of investing in education and skill development to create pathways to economic opportunity. Advocating for Inclusive Practices: As passionate advocates for inclusive hiring practices, we represented Goodwill on various platforms, including the Mayor’s Office of People with Disabilities Champions of Change Business Development Council. By championing inclusive practices, we promoted workforce development initiatives and advocated for policy changes benefiting job seekers from diverse backgrounds. In conclusion, my experience at Goodwill Industries of Greater NY & NJ Day Services has reinforced the transformative power of strategic partnerships and community engagement in driving philanthropic impact. Since 2023, Merge has successfully placed over 125 members of underserved communities into meaningful career opportunities. This includes transitional age foster youth, young adults transitioning from recovery, individuals reentering society, and parents returning to the workforce after caring for a sick child. The barriers these individuals face can be overwhelming and confusing. There's a lot of strange titles for fundraisers. They sound normal to me as an insider, but that doesn't mean they make sense to outsiders! Director of Development or Advancement is common in higher education. Lately I've seen other terms like Development Catalyst, Fundraising Coordinator, Development Specialist. Philanthropy Executive and many, many more. The one thing they all have in common though, is that they all seem intuitive to the hiring manager, but not intuitive at all to the organization's constituents. I've had countless conversations explaining what Development is and what Advancement means. For that reason, I highly recommend that organizations pick titles that are more self explanatory, but are not so out of the ordinary that it would look weird on a resume for a potential employee. If you are looking to post a job today, and aren't constrained by your HR system, think hard about Philanthropy Advisor instead of Director of Development, or Chief Philanthropy Officer, rather than Chief Development Officer. The more we can help the general public understand who fundraisers are and what we do, the better off we are! #philanthropy #fundraising #jobtitle #nonprofit #hr
