Recently, I encountered a challenging formulating issue when helping a colleague refine their body wash formulation. The primary issue involved the formation of white dots whenever the pH was adjusted, a problem I hadn't experienced before. While I managed to identify the likely cause and provided a workaround, the root of the problem remains somewhat unclear, though I do have a few theories. One of which being that surfactants were precipitating out. The formulation included Hostapon SG (Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate), Plantacare 818 UP (Coco-Glucoside), and Cocamidopropyl Betaine as the primary surfactants. Additionally, Sucrose Cocoate was used for its skin-conditioning benefits, and doesn't interfere with foam production. However, whenever the pH of the system was adjusted, the surfactants seemed to precipitate out of the solution, which is unusual. Despite attempts to resolve the issue, it persisted. weirdly, we could "mash” these white spots out (smashing them against the side of the vessel). One work around was to create a buffer to an optimal pH but because I'd decided to change rheology modifiers (simply due to time & laziness) this meant I needed the buffer to be at 6.2-6.8 pH. So instead, I created an ersatz buffer and I added some sodium citrate and then After I had neutralised the system took the pH down to 5:3 pH. I ultimately decided to switch the rheology modifier. The original formulation used a combination of Sepimax Zen and Solagum Tara, but since I couldn't find the appropriate overhead stirring blade and didn’t want to wait overnight for the Sepimax Zen to fully hydrate, I opted for Carbopol Aqua SF2 as the rheo instead. This change also allowed for quicker incorporation, as I didn't need to wait for the polymer to hydrate. The revised formulation maintained the same base ingredients with one exception: I changed the preservative system. I used the Euxyl K940 and my colleague used the Euxyl K903. The new system worked well with the rest of the formulation, maintaining its efficacy and safety profile. I added the beads to give the physical exfoliation and to see if they would suspend well (they did, Aqua SF2 suspends well). The resulting body wash is a mild and gentle but effective body wash.
