Today marks the beginning of Road Safety Week in NZ, giving me an opportunity to bring focus on a crucial issue for Auckland where over half of road trauma affects pedestrians and cyclists. It's important to understand that the speed of a vehicle greatly impacts crash outcomes, and the majority of incidents don't involve reckless behavior. Safe speeds are paramount in reducing road trauma, despite misconceptions about increased congestion. Research shows that managing speeds can actually alleviate congestion in urban areas with minimal impact on travel time. Lower speed limits contribute to smoother traffic flow and fewer delays, whereas higher speeds can lead to more accidents and exacerbate congestion. It's crucial to address this issue collectively and advocate for appropriate speed limits to ensure safer roads for everyone particularly our children.

At the 2023 Australasian Road Safety Conference, Glen Koorey presented a think-piece introducing the current state of play around setting and changing speed limits in NZ, discussed some of the existing challenges to seeing more speed limit changes being enacted, and suggested ways to address these. A significant challenge to date has been presenting suitable local evidence of the safety benefits of lower speeds. There are few case studies so far (which tend to be relatively small or introduced relatively recently), making it difficult to ascribe statistical significance to individual reductions in casualties so far. There is also much more resistance to lower speeds on rural roads, despite their greater overall contribution to road deaths. https://lnkd.in/gh_ccgyZ

🚢 Did you know that ferries are integral to the Greater St. Louis region's history and present? Often overshadowed by bridges and roads, ferries have been silently cruising the rivers, offering more than just a ride across the water. They're a bridge to our past, a nod to the families whose lives revolved around these vital vessels, and to this day, carry their legacy through the names of roads leading to their landings like Tesson Ferry and Lemay Ferry Roads.🌉 But it's not just about history. Today, ferries like the Grafton Ferry are critical connectors for local Southwest Illinois communities. They're not just a link between shores but a lifeline for river towns, offering essential access and boosting tourism. Yet, despite their value, ferries often fly under the radar in transportation planning.
