August 1st, 2023, the #water year 2023/2024 starts. The Ministry of Water Resources & Irrigation worked during the previous water year 2022/2023 to meet the water needs of all sectors, achieve maximum benefit from every drop of water, and support #Egypt’s plan to achieve comprehensive and #sustainable development in various fields. #MWRI -Purifying 33,000 km of #canals and 22,000 km of #drains during the previous year, and coordinating with #agricultural sectors to purify private waterways. -Disinfection of 16,800 km of infected #canals before the period of maximum needs - Rehabilitation of (582) kilometers of canals in the centers of “#Hayah Karima” initiative, and work to #rehabilitate another (1,390) kilometers -Provision of (26) plots of land from the benefits of #irrigation with an area of 32,000 square meters to establish (30) service projects on it to serve the citizens of the centers of the “Hayah Karima” initiative. - Rehabilitation of (1580) Km of canals in various governorates, and work to rehabilitate another (3217) Km -Implementation of the covered #drainage within the control of 89,000 feddans, and the target is 60,000 feddans during the next year - A strategy for the transformation of #modern irrigation in sandy lands, sugar cane plantations and orchards, and a pilot pilot area on the Blucher canal in Aswan Work continues on the implementation of the project for the conveying of agricultural wastewater in the western delta for the water treatment plant in Al-Hamam -An essential project to develop the irrigation and #drainage system in #Siwa Oasis in cooperation with the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces, the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University and the people of Siwa Oasis. -Starting the implementation of the project to establish the new #Dairout Barrage to improve irrigation in the area of 1.60 million feddans in five governorates. - To strengthen the barrages of Zifta and Kafr Rabie, the bridges of Jamara and Amra bridges, the borders of Fom Al-Ismailia and Syracuse, and to secure the barrages of Damietta and Assiut. - Working on modernizing the operating systems of the lock and spillway of the Damietta Dam, the spillway of Esna, and the new Nagaa Hammadi barrages, maintaining the Edvina Barrages, strengthening the mouths of the canals taken from the Ibrahimia Canal, and studying the construction of the new Mouwes Bahr Barrage. -Preparing a database of all existing facilities on waterways, with a total of 50,000 water facilities -Work continues to implement protection facilities from the dangers of floods to protect citizens and facilities, and to harvest rainwater -Issuing the executive regulations of the new Water Resources and Irrigation Law to interpret the articles of the law -Distinguished efforts at the international level to raise the degree of interest in water issues and their relationship to climate change #AWARe #MWRI

No lift for low dam levels: DAM levels across the country remain substantially lower than a year ago, with most water reservoirs not receiving substantial inflows yet during the current rainy season. According to the Namibia Water Corporation’s latest update on the state of the country’s dams, the three dams on which Windhoek depends for a major part of its water supply – Swakoppoort, Von Bach and Omatako – are currently holding about 30,3 million cubic metres of water, compared to combined contents of 63,3 million cubic metres a year ago. The three dams are currently filled to 19,6% of their combined storage capacity – less than half of their combined level of 41% a year ago. The Hardap Dam near Mariental, which is an important source of water for irrigation, is currently storing about 35,8 million cubic metres of water, which is 12,2% of its capacity, compared to a level of about 41,6% (122,8 million cubic metres) at the same time last year. The Naute Dam near Keetmanshoop, which also stores water for irrigation purposes, holds about 33,2 million cubic metres of water at the moment, compared to 56,6 million cubic metres a year ago. The main dam levels reported by NamWater yesterday, with the dams’ readings at the corresponding time a year ago in brackets, are: Swakoppoort 39% (76,4%) Von Bach 11% (28,7%) Omatako 0,7% (2,6%) Hardap 12,2% (41,6%) Neckartal 83,7% (93,5%) Naute 39,8% (67,8%) Oanob 42,7% (62,5%) Otjivero Main 4,6% (14,7%) Otjivero Silt 1,9 (0,7%) Tilda Viljoen 5% (40%) Daan Viljoen 5,5% (16%) Olushandja 37,4% (18,3%) Friedenau 55,4% (72,6%). Solar Irrigation Project Phase 2 4 x 90kW Pump Units 2 x 75kW Pump Units 1 x 45kW Pump Unit 1 x 37kW Pump Unit All pump units installed with above ground hdpe piping into a controll station. Valve/water meter, controll station built and installed. Controll room housing all VSD installed in container as per site regulations. Container consists of 8 x variable speed drives and 1 x 12kW inverter module used to power 2 centre pivots in the event of power cuts. All AC and DC switchgear. Remaining centre pivots are powered by of grid solar systems at dairy and managers houses Phase 3 Pumps are up and running on AC power, next up is the solar being phased in to reduce the effect of power cuts and electricity costs. Phase 4 4 x 315mm pipelines to a holding dam to act as "battery" storage for daylight solar pumping. Holding dam will gravity feed centre pivots in evening or when AC and DC power is not available.

Managing Somalia’s surface and ground water resources for a resilient future. This study delves into the challenges facing #Somalia's surface and groundwater resources due to climate change and population growth. The study underscores that poor management of these resources is driving their depletion. By using The water Evaluation and planing tool( WEAP) , current irrigation practice in the Shabelle and Juba river basins involved 50,000 ha and 15,000 ha, respectively. These findings indicate that the domestic water demand for the current period is 912 million cubic meters (Mm'). Under a long-term plan, irrigation practice in these two river basins would be 135,000 ha and 32,000 ha respectively. The long-term plan results reveal that the domestic and irrigation water demand on the Shabelle river would be 1,542 Mm". The findings also show that, under this long-term plan, the water demand on the Juba river would be 1,627.5 Mm® for domestic use and 2,419 Mm® for irrigation. Higher rainfall would increase the flow of water in the Juba river.
